Product Description

Bruce 'The Boss' Springsteen takes to the stage in the Big Apple and sets out on a live journey into the very heart of rock and roll.

From Amazon.co.uk

There's only one better way than watching Live In New York City to experience these performances by Bruce Springsteen and his reunited E Street Band, and that's if you were actually in Madison Square Garden when they were recorded in June and July 2000. The Boss and his band are in top form. Their sheer exuberance at playing together, not to mention the joy and inspiration they provide their audience, are palpable, thanks in no small part to the excellent direction and superb sound. Highlights? Almost everything, from timeless anthems such as "Born to Run" and "Thunder Road" to the riveting "American Skin (41 Shots)" and a bluesy, solo "Born in the USA" All together now: Bruuuuuuce! --Sam Graham, Amazon.com --This text refers to an alternate DVD edition.

In this world of manufactured pop and hype, it's nice to know that there is still room for Bruce Springsteen. Captured on the final two nights of last years New York City stand, This DVD shows a band still putting its self on the line night after night. The performance through out is excellent and it is nearly impossible to pick highlights, but the extras not broadcast on the HBO special are really the icing on the cake, with wonderfull fun in the middle of Light Of Day where Bruce lets New York know where it would be with out the Garden State (did you know that the Statue of Liberty was in New Jersey ? )and fantastic versions of Jungleland and the rarely played Lost In The Flood. As Bruce says he can't offer life everlasting- Just life right now.
And that's more than good enough.

I doubt you'll ever see a better recorded performance from a rock band *anywhere* than you'll see on this DVD. At once raw and refined, energetic and relaxed, these guys are sheer professionals but also are, quite obviously, having an enormous amount of fun. The songs are mainly classics, but there's enough rarities there to please those with a full Springsteen catalogue. There's a great version of "Jungleland", a terrific urban story, and a traditional account of "Born to Run" - these are probably my favourite two Springsteen songs, although "Youngstown" is starting to grow on me. Everytime I look at this DVD I marvel at Bruce's energy, and the musicianship of Weinberg, Lofgren, Bittan, Federici and Clarence Clemmons. According to the additional material on the DVD this is the first time Nils Lofgren and Steve van Zandt toured together, so with Springsteen's trusty Telecaster the three guitars really gives the band some oomph. I've always wondered about Patti Scialfa's contribution though, as she seems to be always singing and strumming but rarely heard in the mix. But then again, who cares - the product is excellent and these guys leave most of today's 'bands' for dead.

What a band! What a performer! What a concert!! I read a review once that said something like "There are good concerts, there are great concerts and then there are Bruce Springsteen concerts!" If you needed any proof of that then here it is on these 2 stupendous life-affirming DVDs.
There is a sequence of 4 songs here - Youngstown, Murder Inc.,Badlands and Out On The Street - that sum up the amazing power and passion that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band generate every time I have been lucky enough to see them live in the UK. I defy anyone to watch just that segment of this DVD and tell me that they have seen a more powerful, charismatic, passionate performance by anyone - ever! The thing is, this level of performance goes on for another 2 hours! And these guys are all well into their 50's (with the exception of Patti!).
The band are on fire (Max Weinberg has got to be the greatest rock drummer in the World - how does he generate so much power with such a small drumkit?), Bruce is on fire and the audience are on fire!
If you don't have it already, you have to buy this DVD - I guarantee you it will be the greatest rock and roll show you ever saw - the only way to improve it would be to attend one of the shows in person!!

I've never had the chance to see this great rock 'n' roll superstar in person but I would really love too one day. This is probably the next best thing to being at the concert. As always, he gives 110% night in, night out.
The concert is amazing. Performing his greatest hits from the past twenty five years or so. From the opening guitars of My Love Will Not Let You Down all the way through to the finale of If I Should Fall Behind. You will not be disappointed with the quality of the songs that the band performs. But it's not only the songs that are brilliant. Bruce's on-stage antics are also great. For a man of fifty years of age, he acts like somebody half the age. He involves the audience all the time and also shares the microphone with Little Steven Van Zandt (of Sopranos fame), Clarence Clemons, Nils Lofgren and his red-headed woman Patti. During one song, he paces the stage like a pastor off one of those Christian channels on television.
The concert is spread over two discs. The first disc being the HBO television coverage that was shown at the time. This disc also contains a fifteen minute featurette with Bob Costas where he talks to Bruce and other members of the E-Street Band. This featurette also shows some unreleased songs from the concerts. Also included in this disc is a Photo Gallery.
The second disc includes eleven songs that have previously not been seen on television. This disc could've been a concert of its own. Among the songs on this disc are Thunder Road, Lost In The Flood, Ramrod, The Promise (with Bruce alone on the piano - no other band members) and If I Should Fall Behind.
The picture quality of the concert is superb. It is possibly one of the best DVDs that I have seen in a long time. The sound quality is also equally amazing.

You can see that Bruce and the E-Streeters really enjoy what they do, and that feeling transfers to the crowd watching him and to myself (and no doubt other viewers of this concert). To Bruce, this is his life, and while he and the band have made a great deal of money over the years, they enjoy it so much. In this day and age, the idea is just to be famous, regardless of how and when you become famous. Bruce and the E-Streeters are wonderful examples of how to put the heart and soul into what you do and be real inspiration to people, unlike the boy and girl gimmick bands that are only interested in profit and give nothing and do not develop their acts into anything remotely interesting or inspiration. Consequently everyone, these bands, their fans and their management, fail to realise the true potential of what they are doing and by encouraging the superficial elements to the fore, dupe people into buying, at best childish and throwaway music. The artists and management may have the money but ultimately lose out on what the meaning of what they are doing is. Bruce and company enjoy what they are doing because they know what is most important.
Superficial is no something that can be applied to Bruce and company, as this disc proves. While it does not have most of the better-known songs on it, the concert shows the diverse nature that the band stands for.
