Book Description

Go back into the subway and look beyond the graffiti. Lift up your heads and look around, see what Bruce has revealed the beauty in the subway population, the enormous amount of colour below and above ground, the varieties and pleasures to be seen from the subway. The shrill insistence of the noise in our ears and of the graffiti to our eyes does not end the catalogue of effects the subway has on our senses. Bruce Davidson has reopened and rewritten that catalogue with this magnificent series of photographs. Light, colour, humanity, affection, and hope can be added to our impressions of the New York subway system. Henry Geldzahler In 1980 Bruce Davidson began photographing the New York subway system, venturing regularly into this intoxicating, sometimes dangerous subterranean world. At first Davidson photographed in black and white, but he soon realised colour was necessary to depict the intensity of this graffiti-covered landscape. Originally published in 1986, this updated Steidl edition of Subway is printed from new scans of Davidsons Kodachrome slides and features additional images.

5.0 out of 5 stars exceptional 24 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
The photographs presented here are in no way amateurish, the dedication, bravery and the technical skill are clear to see to anyone with any knowledge of photography. The photographs are comparable to Robert Franks great work The Americans, to show social documentary images in their cultural and historical context is a difficult challenge to any photographer, to stamp your authority and individuality on a selection of images is what sets some photographers apart from others. The work here is a just example of a photographers vision. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in not only photography but in contemporary culture and modern history. The 80's are now history, as with the work being done today that will become history in a few years, or indeed after the shutter has been pressed, photography remains our link to the past, present and future.

Subway, is an exceptional collection of photographs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beauty in chaos 2 Oct 2011
By S. Gee
Format:Hardcover
I have Davidson's Outside Inside compendium (which includes most of the images in this collection), so wasn't initially intending on picking this up. However, the Outside Inside collection reproduces the images in black and white, and on picking this book in Foyles while buying a present for somebody else, it became very apparent that colour is integral to the images. I was immediately seduced and bought the book.

The printing and binding of this book is of exceptional quality and the size is just the right balance for being able to really see the images while not being too big to easily hold and view.

In terms of the images within this collection, they are just superb. Davidson takes you right into the dark heart of the New York Subway system of the late 70s early 80s, and you are plunged into the melee along with all the other poor suckers taking the train. Some of the images are so striking they elicit a real physical response - friends have literally gasped at the more hardcore images, but there is beauty in there as well, and despite the raw feel to these pictures, they're also clearly carefully considered and expertly taken by a photographer at the top of his game.

Amazon's current price is very good - I would suggest you don't hesitate - buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! 18 Jan 2012
By Aberod
Format:Hardcover
I can remember being so frustrated when earlier editions of this book were selling for as much as £300, way out of my reach. That price tag though is a good indicator of how wonderful these images are, and I'm so pleased to finally have a copy of my own. I cant even begin to tell you how these pictures articulate to us the story of life below the city, you really have to buy the book and find out.
