Product Description

Brownout On Breadfruit Boulevard is the most entertaining and controversial of Mo's five novels. Wildly violent, raunchy and hilarious, the story follows the career of Victoria Init - the consort of a middling Philippine politician who should be entering her prime of life. Distracted by an ambition to put her dusty provincial fiefdom on the wider cultural map, she becomes enmeshed in a series of complex events as horrific as they are hilarious, intertwining gun law and political correctness and a wide cast of international characters. Set in Macau, the Phillppines, Japan, and New York, Mo's brilliant novel can be read as a revenger's tragedy, a comedy of polygot manners, or as the newest instalment in his candid commentary on the waxing and waning of the struggle between East and West.

Having been a keen follower of Mo since the Monkey King and Sour Sweet (both very good) I was very disapointed with this. From the scatological opening chapter, it continued with deeply unpleasant characters doing unpleasnt actions. I couldn't get what I think were the humorous episodes and the skipping from scene to scene was very confusing. After struggling to the end I did the decent thing and binned it.

HASH(0x902e124c) out of 5 stars Mo' Mo, please 27 Oct. 2009

It is a shame this writer isn't better known in the US. His insight into Chinese culture is profound; his grasp of history (see his An Insular Possession) is superb. This isn't his best novel, but it is still well worth the effort. Be warned: he doesn't shy away from, um, earthy subject matter.

HASH(0x8f8787c8) out of 5 stars enticing but 8 May 2008

Enticing but its really hard to read. His characters are interesting. Some of their background comes out of nowhere unlike other writers of philippine fiction. I could tell the author is really intelligent and he switches voices from character to character convincingly. But in perhaps an amateur sort of way, he uses so much side clauses, side info, and sentences on the side that its really hard to follow his writing. Its like reading On the Road by Jack Kerouac - rambling on with run-on sentences. Like my writing here. haha. I had to put it down after the first seven chapters - and since the story hasn't even developed by then.
