This is a collection of many songs that were written out of the official history of Van Morrison's discography. He fell out with his record company and for decades afterwards refused to perform live such hits as "Brown Eyed Girl". But here they all are for our enjoyment.
This is one packed album, which varies from somewhat underdeveloped versions of later hits, such as "Madame George" which appeared later on "Astral Weeks", and of songs which give you an idea of where Morrison was heading in his first solo albums. It doesn't really have the cohesion of a 'proper' album - it sounds very much like a collection of old tracks that've been flung together.. but then it's only doing what it says on the tin.
Not as essential to a Morrison fan's collection as the excellent "The Philosopher's Stone", a much more coherent collection of unreleased tracks (and two 80 minute discs long!).
Oh, but perhaps most interesting for me on this album is that the version of "Brown Eyed Girl" is the unedited one that you'll still hear on the radio to this day. Morrison was never "overcome thinkin' 'bout laughing and a runnin'", but "Making love in the green grass, behind the stadium". The original was a crude cut of the first verse over the second, but on this CD the uncut version is restored in all its 'shocking'-ness.
A good album, but not the best.

As I have pointed out for many of the other endless versions of the "Bang" material available on Amazon, this is part of the endless repackaging of a small amount of stuff Van did before falling out with the Bang label. Some if it is good and more is interesting but there are any number of versions so it is worth looking through them and finding the cheapest. TB sheets, the early version of Madame George and Brown Girl are the essentials but you can get the whole lot of Bang stuff including the deliberately bad material he recorded to get out of his contract very cheaply so it is worth looking around.
Best of all, buy it second hand so that the people who endlessly peddle this decades old material in ways which deliberately tries to pretend it is new or "rediscovered" work, wont profit from what is an ongoing music industry scandal.

'Open up the window, let me breathe.' 'snuffling noises' TB sheets tune, fools room? Is he singing an old song and adding his own improvised lyrics? All the greats did it. Why not Van the Man? Post Them, pre Astral Weeks, this comes as a cut price compilation type of CD, cheap at twice the price. Bert Burns produced these tracks and whoever hired the band or WAS the band deserves a gong because this cooks man!
