Product Description

Product Description

George Brough started building motorcycles shortly after the First World War. The machines were named Brough Superior both to distinguish them from his father's Brough machines and to denote the highest levels of performance and quality of manufacture. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the name Brough Superior was synonymous with the very best in motorcycle design. The machines gained fame in the hands of riders such as Bert le Vack, Eric Fernihough, Noel Pope and, of course, T E Lawrence 'Lawrence of Arabia'.

About the Author

Peter Miller has enjoyed a lifetime's interest in historic vehicles. Vintage cars were an early passion, but over the years early motorcycles have become a more dominant interest. His early motorcycling experience was obtained with Corgi scooters which, with their single gear and 30mph maximum speed, represent the antithesis of the Brough Superior. It was 1999 before he gained his first experience with a Brough Superior, a 1939 SS80 De Luxe model, which he subsequently bought and now regrets the missed 'Broughing' years. Early retirement has given Peter time for vehicle restoration and to research background histories of the machines he owns. His previous book for Crowood is Morgan Three-wheeler. Resident - Dorset

Brough Superior 22 July 2010
Format:Hardcover
This is an excellent book in every way, well written, comprehensive, beautifully illustrated with fine photographs and printed to a high standard. It will appeal most obviously to enthusiasts for the marque but is also interesting to those with a more general interest in motorcycles of that period. Brough Superior was never a technical leader and the book is not unduly flattering. Some comparisons with competitors would have added even more to the book. By the end of the production in 1939 Brough Superior was far behind a competitor such as Vincent-H.R.D.

Brough Superior is generally reqarded as the Rolls-Royce of motorcycles, yet there has been only one history book written on this Nottingham based manufacturer -- back in 1964 and updated twice, the last time in 1984. That first effort was excellent for the day, but there has been so very much more history uncovered in more recent years, and a lot of Brough Superiors have since been superbly restored. This wonderful new Brough Superior history is loaded with new detail and a lot of really nice colour photos. This is likely to be one of those books which will increase significalty in value after the print run is sold. There is not enough interest in these sorts of books for subsequent print runs, so my advice is to buy a copy while you can. Thank you, Peter Miller, for authoring this obvious labour of love. I am proud to have this book in my personal library.
