Brotherly love leads to A Brother's Debt

A call for help brings Step Velkin to the frontier, where he discovers his estranged brother is dead.
As if that isn't bad enough, he learns his brother has left him with debts he can't afford to pay off. Debts which are owned by Ettore Carboni, one of the biggest and most powerful gangsters in that sector of space.
With no other choice open to him Step is forced to work for Carboni to pay off the debt. His first job, to smuggle a package; unfortunately, one of Carboni's rivals is after the package, and he doesn't care if he has to use bribery or force to get it.

The first adventure for Step as he adjusts to his new life, his new - barely space worthy - ship and the perils of the frontier sector.

More About the Author

Although he's travelled the world, and seen much of life, Jones prefers to be sat in the quiet of his home with his laptop, writing.
His fictions are set in places which mirror his homeland, and much of his inspiration is drawn from his surroundings. Karl draws on his teen years in Bournemouth, with its quiet village-like suburbs, and bustling town centre, and he uses these settings to bring his books to life.
His thrillers stories stem from the darkest depths of his mind, however, his tales of space stretch further than your imagination can take you, and you find yourself spiralling out of control into the imaginary universes he creates as you turn the pages faster than warp-speed in order to delve further into his story.
With a bibliography which spans many genres, including amongst them thrillers and romances as well as tales of the paranormal, you're never going to be short on choice for reading material, because never sleeping, Karl writes from dusk 'til dawn, and occasionally even through 'til morn' to bring his eager readers the latest instalments from his sought-after, bestselling stories.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good idea 28 April 2012
By Ignite TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
This is about a man left with his brother's debt to a gangster. He undertakes to deliver an unidentified package as part payment and a second gang boss, after attempting to buy it, tries to steal it. The story seems to stop rather than end and the debt is not fully paid. As this is a novella I felt that there was plenty of scope to tie up the ends of the story and make it into a full length book. It doesn't really read like science fiction but like a gangster story transferred to space.

The sentences tend to be over long and rambling. In the case of the dialogue it makes it stilted and the characters sound pompous. I think this is a good idea for a book but it needs to lighten up. If it were less formal in its language it would be a happier read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crime Thriller in Space 25 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This novella is a mix of Sci-Fi and Crime thriller and I think it works really well. Karl Jones has a great knack of writing believable and interesting characters and this is no exception. The interaction between the newly formed friendships and the rescued girl and the rival criminal gangs kept me turning the pages on my kindle. Now I need to look up the next in the series to find out what happened next.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sci-Fi gangster novella.. 28 Dec 2012
By Cheryl M-M TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
This sci-fi gangster novella veers away considerably from the usual hard hitting material a la Shattered (Donna Harp Series) Karl Jones tends to produce.
Although the concept is interesting it fails to deliver and meanders into mediocrity. The authors seem unable to decide whether they are presenting a Boardwalk Empire meets space colony or a Hans Solo with sidekicks story. As it is both subplots meld into one with neither winning the trophy.
Clearly the creativity and capacity to create is there, however sustaining an attention capturing dialogue is quite another in this example.
I received a free copy of this book for my review.

3.0 out of 5 stars A brothers Debt review 25 Oct 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Just finished this on my kindle and found it to be one of those books that you just have to finish. A good mix of my two favourite genre sci-fi and crime which has left me looking for more Step Velkin stories. From being a pilot of a fast space fighter or scout ship to suddenly becoming Captain of his own badly maintained ship inherited from his brother along with a sizeable debt throws him immediately into a series of adventures which show the character to be smart and intuitive. His abrupt meeting with JV shows the start of a promising partnership and the introduction of a rescued twelve year old strong willed girl leaves the reader expecting a series of complications for Step and JV. Only time will tell but I for one look forward to reading more of this series.
