5.0 out of 5 stars 'Still Addictive After All These Years', 27 May 2008
By N. KELLY (Sligo, Ireland) - See all my reviews

Wonderful series. Particularly nostalgic for some reason - it really captures the seventies somehow. Surely it's a bit unfair to call it a soap, it's hard to imagine any prime time TV drama nowadays going into such detail about the running of a company - business students could learn from a programme like this. Great stories about real people more than made up for the technical imperfections. What about the second series? And the rest? Give us a box set with the whole thing in it! A few years ago an 'After They Were Famous' programme featuring some of the actors was shown on TV which unfortunately I missed, perhaps it could be included as a Special Feature on a future DVD release. We live in hope!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Time Capsule, 28 May 2007
By Nighthawk (Wellington, New Zealand) - See all my reviews
This is a lovely bit of nostalgia. It will never be broadcast on public TV, anymore, as the actors are lighting up and offering each other ciggys & booze every second scene.

Haters of politcal correctness will love this trip back to the good(?) old days.

The clothes, hair do's, coffee cups, and phones are all part of a fascinating time capsule (including Johnny Briggs - Mike Baldwin - as a 20 something mini-cab driver).

Can't wait for the second (and subsequent) season's to be released.

5.0 out of 5 stars classic TV drama, 30 Jun 2007
By R. Cope "cope2" (UK) - See all my reviews

The Brothers was the forerunner to Howards' Way both having been created and produced by Gerry Glaister. Centered around the fictional road haulage company Hammond Transport it is a wonderfully rivetting saga of three brothers and their late father's mistress who inherits shares in the company as part of his will. Naturally Mrs. Hammond is none too pleased to find out all about her husband's mistress and also illegitimate daughter at the reading of the will... and so the scene is set within the first quarter of an hour for 10 episodes of personal clashes and boardroom politics. Boasting a top notch cast which includes Glyn Owen as the oldest brother Edward (a character cloned later for Howards' Way), Jennifer Wilson as the mistress Jennifer Kingsley, Jean Anderson as the fierce matriach Mary Hammond, Robin Chadwick as youngest brother David and Richard Easton as sensible middle sibling Brian. Hilary Tindall is wonderful as Brian's scheming flirty wife Ann who intends to climb the social ladder at any cost. The series would last four years and cover 92 episodes, but is is never finer than in this series 1. 15 million viewers would tune in to BBC 1 each Sunday night to find out the latest scandals in and out of the boardroom. Whilst Howards' Way might have been it's flashier cousin, The Brothers is by far the serial with the better plotting and performances. Although the fashions and attitudes might have dated (check out the kipper ties, flowing smocks... not to mention the serial smoking and drinking) the core drama is as good as it ever was. Throughly recommended.
