4.0 out of 5 stars Comrades in casings, 19 Feb 2009
By Barney McGrew "Charlie" (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Another welcome return for The Doctor's greatest enemies; Brotherhood of the Daleks returns the TARDIS to Spiridon, home of the invisible peace-loving Spiridons and sometime base of the emotionless Nazi pepperpots. The Third Doctor and Jo Grant visited the planet in the 1972 adventure `Planet of the Daleks'; as they did that time, the time travellers encounter a squad of Thals, the race that The Daleks shared a home when they were simply a race of humanoids then known as Kaleds. This time The Daleks are using replicants to infiltrate the Thals - this gets a bit confusing when we encounter `replicated replicants' (!) - But the myriad twists and turns and exciting dénouement make for an absorbing, if convoluted listen.

The saga of the Doctor's companion, Charley, hiding the fact that she previously travelled with his future incarnation, continues to slide inexorably towards its inevitable conclusion, and India Fisher and Colin Baker play this brilliantly; you never quite know how much The Timelord knows, or suspects. Fisher meanwhile, has Charley constantly fleeing the scene to avoid the truth emerging, and her combination of insouciance and fear of exposure are well-acted and extremely effective in building tension. It will be a shame when this mix of time travellers is scrapped by the production team, but in the meantime we can enjoy the mystery.

The CD extras are the usual interviews with cast and crew. The most notable contribution is that of Michael Cochrane; the actor played Lord Cranleigh in the 1982 television story `Black Orchid', and his memories of the shoot make for fascinating listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars remembrance of the thals, 11 Nov 2008

another audio story featuring colin baker as the sixth doctor who. this one follows on from the previous two sixth doctor audios in that his companion is charley pollard played by india fisher. charley previously travelled with the eighth doctor. and hasn't told the sixth that. yet.

the story runs for four episodes, of approx twenty five minutes duration each. there are two episodes on each of the two cd's in the box. the first begins with a trailer for the forthcoming release curse of the daleks, an adaptation of a 1960's stage play, and both discs end with interviews with the cast and crew involved in the story.

in a slight change to the norm there is no trailer for the next in the regular big finish range.

since this follows on from the previous two sixth doctor and charley stories there is a story arc here, although you should be able to get into this one without having heard the previous two. but I would recommend hearing them first as this is a rather involved little tale.

this story involves the doctor and charley arriving on a jungle planet. with invisible natives. deadly plants. blonde haired soldiers. and daleks.

all this may sound familiar to those who know their doctor who tv continuity. but there's actually far more going on here than meets the eye. the tardis crew have stumbled into the middle of some very deadly experiments.

and I can't say too much more than that. you'll thank me for it because this is quite a remarkable script, with a story that contains an amazing number of twists and turns, and a few very clever concepts. plus one absolutely brilliant character moment for charley. you'll lose count of the number of times it makes you say 'what!'.

and make sure you don't turn the second disc off before the end. let it play itself out.

a quite superb script, and one that will doubtless reward re listenings. a highly recommended audio

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, 9 Dec 2008
By Iain McClumpha (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews

I was looking forward to this story, but I'm afraid it left me wondering why they produced such a pointless tale.

Daleks are underused and the plot is unnecessarily convoluted.
Almost as if the writers are trying to be clever instead of giving us a rollicking good adventure.

Sorry, but it's not a patch on BFP's previous Dalek tales.
