What a gem of a tv series this was. Shame it never went beyond 3 seasons. I first saw it on Virgin media. The two main actors aren't American but you wouldn't know it. Inspired casting and brilliant scripts keep you hanging on to watch the Caffey boys venture for control of there worlds of organized crime and politics. Loosely based on Whitey bulger and his bro in the Boston underworld of Irish criminal gangs. They were like depicted in this show protected by an FBI 'friend' who ended up doing time for his dealings with the Irish gangs.
If interested there is a facinating short location doc on You tube 'Brotherhhood.' Where the writer and one of the leading cast visit locations for the series. Jason Issacs is brilliant in his role as Michael Caffey the returning gangster who tries to claw back power and control from Freddie Cork. It is hard hitting and a times brutal. If you liked The Sopranos you will love this.
It shows in my opinion the gap between US dramas and our weak 'soapy' Brit dramas. Admittedly one episode of this or The Sopranos cost more than 8 episodes of a UK one. Even the Aussies in such great series as Underbelly show up our pathetic offerrings such as 'Father & Son' or 'Family.' as uninpired. So grab yourself a bit of truly brilliant drama you can revisit again and again. Oh and top of the morning to you.

I was attracted to buy this due to an ad email received from Amazon.UK, and after reading the reviews of the show, and now I am really satisfied to have bought it. It is very very hard and realistic, dark as THE SHIELD but with a vein of real sadness and desperation in it, which in THE SHIELD was probably hidden by the police actions which here are not in the plot, of course. And anyone has noticed that there is no music, no music at all during the episodes but only in the last moments of each episode proceeding then on the end titles? It occurred to me that the total absence of music concours deeply in the total mood of sadness, desperation and squallor of the whole plot. In conclusion, BRILLIANT, SUPERB TV SHOW, but not one of course for any little smile, not even now and then.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Drama 6 Nov 2011
By Gary C
Format:DVD
If you like me and you loved The Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy then you'll love this. Another great American series. Tragic that it only ran for 2.5 series (series 3 is reduced to 9 episodes) as it's right up there with the others I've named who all ran for longer.
Another tragedy is showtime won't list a soundtrack. Some of the closing titles songs are superb, different one each episode, but unless you know them you won't know the artist.

A great show, just didn't run long enough.
