Product Description

Denny, a teenager, is one of the unlucky ones, a survivor, one of those who have come through a nuclear war alive. In plain language he sets down all that has happened to him, what he sees, and what he feels in the first days after the bomb has dropped. This novel won The Other Award for 1984.

Although it is very difficult to determine one's favourite book this is the one that I am forced to say everytime I am asked, some eight years after first reading it. I can only agree with the above review that a film version is drastically overdue - the groundwork is already there anyway for the production company with amazing description of human emotions and happenings.

In a much needed change from the drivel that adorns many young people's novels this is a sophisticated novel which deals with a serious issue and does not have to end with a perfect scenario to leave the reader feeling at peace and contented. Contentment is achieved much more subtly, the ending can simply makes you grateful for what you have in your own life, and makes you realise how quickly those things can be gone.

Overall it's a magnificent book which should be encouraged more frequently at school level, as Robert Swindells is still ignored although is prominently placed on the syllabus. And like I said to start with - It's my favourite book, I can't recommend it more than that.

When first given this book as a text to be studied in English I wasn't optimistic, however having read it I was much more than pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it so much that I'm stunned a film version hasn't been produced yet!

My review 14 Dec 2002

Format:Paperback
When I read this book the first time I found it shocking, but I do not agree that only older people should read it as I am in year 9 and our class have not had nightmares. I think althought the book is shocking it is very educational and everyone should read it and be warned of the consequences of nuclear weapons.
I also think that Swindells has created a vivid and quite realistic story with characters that suit the tale. The story has been set up well using a lot of good English and good imagination. In my opinion this book is useful and interesting for study of styles of English or just for pleasure reading.
It is highly recommended.
