Basic set up was easy but for a long time it would either print landscape pages single-sided or portrait pages double-sided, which was not what I wanted. And if I threatened to overtax its tiny little mind it sulked and told me that there was a paper jam, when there was none! However, the Brother web site's FAQs did provide an answer and now all seems to be well. But I do feel that it should have been possible to do this from the supplied manual and it seems a bit light weight and flimsy so only 4 out of 5!
Two months later, I still found it recalcitrant. It can print fast and quietly but takes a long time to decide to do anything. I cannot find any way of persuading it to copy double-sided. And to day it has again falsely claimed that it has a paper jam when there is no paper in it. Following pulling all the levers it asks me to do it now says "unable to print 6F". Well, I can take a hint and it can go in the skip tomorrow. In short, a useless piece of cheap plastic rubbish.
Once I got it working, I was delighted with it and was able to use it as a colour photocopier as well.
So far, the printer seems to be working fine.
It's connected by WiFi to varous devices (OSX, iOS and Android) and by USB to my desktop Windows 7 Home Premium 64 PC.
Set up was OK'ish but Windows kept trying to load it's own drivers as soon as the USB cable was plugged in...eventually I just let Windows get on with that, and then installed the Brother drivers etc once Windows had finished (...apparently you can't stop Windows doing that in the 'Home' version).
It took 2 or 3 goes of inserting the cartidges slowly to get the printer to recognise them.
Print quality is acceptable...I've set Preferences to Draft, non-Vivid etc and saved the Profile. It prints quite quickly, and doesn't go through the endless cleaning cycles (aka 'deliberate ink wasting starategy') that the likes of Canon implement. I haven't yet tried to print any gloss photos...or do any Scanning. I haven't connected up the Fax feature.
As for replacement cartridges, I contacted to the Brother helpline who pointed me towards ... http://support.brother.com/g/b/colist.aspx?c=gb&lang=en&prod=mfcj650dw_us_eu_as&cao=lc ...which shows that the LC121 (ave 300 pages printed) and LC123 (ave 600 pages printed) are the correct type. The LC127XL mentioned elsewhere in the Comments is not compatible with the J650.
Build quality seems OK'ish but perhaps not as well finished as it's competitors, but Reliability and Running Costs are my main concerns ...if I have any issues I'll Update here.
Definitely recommend it for home office use.
However it is a good printer and scanner and up to the job so recommended. I do not have a fax connection so cannot comment on that aspect.
I even managed to get my old computer connected by wireless which is an unexpected bonus.

Disappointing - not that easy to set up and still can't scan (luckily can use Paint instead to scan). Good size for a desktop. Slow to produce several photocopies.Published 2 months ago by J.M. Watts

This printer was easy to setup and so far the results are much better than the ink wasting HP it replaced. Print quality is good and very fast. Read morePublished 8 months ago by Dave Mills

Love my Brother Printer as everthing is printed beautifully although it is a bit slow printing photos. Tried a few times to set it up wirelessly and needed help in the end.Published 14 months ago by Brocher
Great printer, but 2 sided printing doesn't work very well and sometimes there is a problem with connecting wirelessly, shame as print quality is excellent.Published 16 months ago by RICHARD JENKINS
