A great all rounder. No flaws in my use of it.
on 18 August 2015
I purchased this for several reasons for my home office and family use.
1) With two teenage kids going through school, I was permanently fighting with inkjet printers, either print queue issues, jobs getting stuck, ink running out. It was becoming a major pain, and printing just shouldn't impact your life like that! Nearly £40 per month on ink.
I did the math and it was a little more expensive but did depend on how much I would have to replace the toner (Get the high capacity toners!)
Normally I just download the drivers and leave all of the bloatware out of it, and you can do that, but if you plan on scanning things in, then do install the control centre application. This lets you setup a pin code for each PC and have it as a scan destination. This is good for single scans, but comes into it's own when used with the Duplex ADF on the top.
I haven't scanned huge volumes in, but the simplicity of it is great. Load the double sided letters into the ADF, then on the device, tell it to duplex scan, and select the PC destination it's going to. By the time you have sat back down at your PC, the control centre is open, and your document is there in the format you selected. ( I normally chose PDF and this works well)
I have used this with Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8 & 8.1, and now Windows 10. It operates like any other printer would. The duplex works well, as does the black and white setting. Quality is what you would expect of an office grade printer. It's not going to win any photo realistic recreation awards. But there are plenty of toner saving options.
My only gripe is the warning nag screens for toner replacement. The nagging starts far too early, and you only need to change it once the tone is actually out.
I have not used the fax capability as it is nowhere near a phone line and in this day and age, I have no need to send faxes down a phone line.
I can say that even if the economics don't quite work out, the stress and time factor of this over the inkjets I used to have is worth the additional cost.
