Product Description

In this book from Martin Roth's series of international thrillers, Brother Half Angel is the leader of a secret new church military order, dedicated to helping Christians under attack around the world. He is sent to China, where an underground seminary is under siege from fanatical sword-wielding members of a local cult who still pay homage to the bloodthirsty extremists who tried to expel all foreigners from China in the nineteenth century.

But while under attack from external forces, the seminary has its own internal divisions. The director, Uncle Ling, a hero of the underground Chinese church, holds secrets that he cannot reveal. And now the tensions are threatening the marriage of idealistic young American missionaries Daniel and Jenny Westloke.

This gripping thriller offers relentless suspense while raising serious questions – how far can Christians go to defend themselves? When should they turn the other cheek? What happens when a Christian kills in self-defense? And should those who live by the sword really expect to die by the sword? (Cover design by Romit Berger.)

Praise for Martin Roth’s thriller “Prophets and Loss”:

“A thrilling ride that begins as a story of murder and revenge and ends as a reflection on loss and forgiveness....Fast-paced and edgy.” - SydneyAnglicans.net

“Wow!.…When “Prophets and Loss” arrived…I certainly wasn’t expecting a meaty murder mystery cum terrorist plot. And when I realized that’s what it was, I certainly wasn’t then expecting Roth’s Johnny Ravine mystery to deliver such a fabulous gospel message….This is a great book for a Christian or as a starter for a non-Christian. A fabulous surprise.” - The Presbyterian Pulse

Praise for Martin Roth’s thriller “Hot Rock Dreaming” (Australian Christian Book of the Year finalist):

“Roth is a Christian author and, although spiritual warfare is crucial to the plot, this book is still a murder mystery…Thought-provoking and an enjoyable read.” – On Fire

“Highly readable…You will be both entertained and educated.” – Journey

3.0 out of 5 stars Brother Half Angel (Military orders Series, Book 1) 2 Mar 2012
By Book Diva - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for my review.

This was an interesting book with a really good explanation of history of the Boxers in China and how they drove the Christian Missionaries out of China. Not only is this book interesting regarding China's oppression of Christians, but includes some fascinating facts about the rise of a South Korea church. Before reading, don't harbor the idea that Brother Half Angel is a heavenly being, or that he is perfect and pure. Please read the book to find out who this "Brother" is and how he fits into the scheme of this book.

I was a little disappointed that the characters were not as well-rounded and real to me as they could have been. It would have been more satisfying and may have made the characters seem more real. Because of this fact, I was not as empathetic as I could have been toward the characters and their issues.

I can recommend this book if eastern religion history is interesting to you, as it sets the stage for the sequels to follow.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spiritually accurate 18 Jan 2012
By Joana James - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
This book brings to light the many challenges missionaries face on the mission field. It also brings up the age old question "What is a Christian to do when threatened?" Many times it's ok to wait until threatened but as this book points out, sometimes it's necessary to be proactive. This is a great read, well written and an accurate account of the spiritual atmosphere in the countries mentioned.

5.0 out of 5 stars A riveting read 13 Jan 2012
By PepperPete - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
The author paints a story with true to life characters who are at the same time spiritual and genuine in their faith, and yet humanly faulted. The story builds in suspense with a twisty plot and a some unique ideas, blending ancient and modern ways to deal with a persecuted church.

I liked how the missionaries were portrayed, with influences from past personal history and the perceptions that were unearthed about how East and West see each other. The book was written well, showing a small facet of China after decades of persecution and now as it enters into current times.

The resolution of conflict comes through Brother Half-angel, the war seasoned, Korean, secret, church 'hit man'. By the time the book reaches its climax, there is a tension about what this untameable character will do and whether the result will be good.

I enjoyed the read from start to end, finding the story to be refreshingly different and the fast style and unfolding of the story meant the book was hard to put down.
