I've owned and used this printer for quite some time now and it has been very reliable. It was easy to install and, once one sorts out the formula, prints both sides fairly easily too, but there is some slight paper curl. I am not a heavy user - perhaps only a bit over1000 sheets a year - but my first toner cartridge lasted almost three years and printed cleanly with no smudging right to the end. The new cartridge was easy to fit.
The pros of this printer are;
Easy to install
Compact size
Easy to use
Reliable
The cons are
When printing more than about 10 sheets, the paper tends to curl and spill off the machine
Does use some power on standby - worth switching off at night
The feed for thicker card is a little cumbersome
Manual "Duplex" takes some working out
All in all, I like this printer and recommend it

Although i am generally happy with the performance of this product i cannot believe the noise level it generates when printing. I upgraded from an HL1030 which i have had for 6 trouble free years, hence the reason for opting for another Brother machine. However the HL1030 was much quieter than the HL5240 which is referred to constantly as an 'iron lung'. If silence is golden do not buy the HL5240!
