Product Description

Product Description

"Brother Fish" is an Australian saga spanning eighty years and four continents. Inspired by real events, Bryce Courtenay tells a story of three people from vastly differing backgrounds. All they have in common is a tough beginning in life. Jack McKenzie is a harmonica player, soldier, dreamer and small-time professional fisherman from a tiny island in Bass Strait. Nicole Lenoir-Jordan is a strong-willed woman hiding from an ambiguous past in Shanghai. Larger than life, Private Jimmy Oldcorn was once a street kid and leader of a New York gang. Together they reap a vast and not always legitimate fortune from the sea. "Brother Fish" is an inspiring human drama of three lives brought together and changed forever by the extraordinary events of recent history. But most of all it is about the power of friendship and love.

A big story 10 April 2007
Format:Hardcover
I've always preferred Bryce Courtenay's books on Africa, and was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed reading this large tale of two mates who met during the Korean War.

Jacko is your (almost stereotypical) aussie battler, who does it tough before looking for something different and joining the army at the tail end of the Second World War. His mate is a larger than life American private oozing natural leadership and a charisma that draws the ladies to him.

Thrown into the mix, somewhat incongrously, is a displaced Russian Countess we first see as Jacko's teacher on a small island off mainland Australia, who harbours her own tale of hardship and adventure.

Courtenay has an easy to read writing style which ensures the book, albeit large, never drags. He also writes about a war that is not as often written about as other conflicts, including a single person description of the Battle of Kapyong which fairly pulsates.

Worth curling up with.

I read Courtenay last year, and was most impressed by Tandia. So, thought I'd give this one a shot.

From a promising start, involving hardship only few can imagine, the novel loses shape and direction. The telling of the stories of Jack and Jimmy is enthralling and captivating. Then, it shapes into an never-ending life story of the third character, Nicole, and how the three characters then intertwine.

And this is where it appears to go so wrong. Well written, I agree. But it just drags on and on and on, in sometimes excruciating detail. I could have skipped the whole of the second half of the book, and just read the final three pages.

If you are off on a long holiday, then this may be for you. Unfortunately, I found it far too long, too drawn out, and left me feeling rather frustrated.

Brother Fish 26 Mar 2008
Format:Hardcover
As usual Bryce Courtenay has come up with another great book. Brother Fish tells the tale of the forgotten war in Korea and gives an insight into the conditions that men had to fight under and when captured in POW camps, together with a lasting friendship. I recomend any of Mr Courtenay's books who must be one of the best modern day authors.
