I print photographs so my ink use is quite heavy. For letters/type it is fairly average . The clarity of print is exceptional. I cannot fault the printer

The short answer is "yes" this printer will accept third party cartridges. Over the years I have used such cartridges because of cost saving BUT eventually been forced to replace my printers because of the long-term erosion of the printer heads. I now use only the recommended cartridges.

The Brother DCP-J552DW scans direct to a graphic application, to an email and yes directly to a media card or USB flash memory. This is my third Brother printer in 20 years or so and I rate this one very highly. Fantastic for printing photographs.

Probably, only the manufacture's ink will work when you try to instal the cartridges, so you could spend money on other compatible cartridges only to find that they cannot be installed. The original ink looks fine to me and the cartidges which come with the printer claim to have 80% of a normal cartridge so should last a bit before you need to replace.
