I've read a lot of books by British volunteers who served in the International Brigades, many by so called literary figures. This is the first book I've come across that had an "average man in the street" Brit volunteer, and on Franco's side to boot. Thomas' account is one of the best written personal accounts about this terrible war that I have come across, equally matching and even surpassing, Orwell's Homage to Catalonia. Regardless of your political creed Thomas' writing and Stradling's excellent introduction make this a must read book for any unbiased student of the Spanish Civil War.
