Product Description

About the Artist

Led by singing drummer Marshall Munhumumwe, a nephew of Zimbabwe's pop legend Thomas Mapfumo, The Four Brothers came together in 1977 out of the ashes of the Great Sounds. Releasing Makorokoto in 1980, the band found great success with their fast paced, highly danceable music, blending Mapfumo’s chumurenga styles with sithole and rhumba, and quickly established themselves one of Zimbabwe’s most popular musical acts.

After signing to Cooking Vinyl in 1988, the band embarked on a tour of the UK and Canada. These tours proved to be of great significance as they provided the group with means to a greater degree of musical freedom. The Brothers could at last afford their own instruments and were no longer tied to the constraints of their residency at the Saratoga bar in Harare.

Their popularity continued in Zimbabwe but in 1997, Munhumumwe suffered a stroke and had to stop performing. The Four Brothers continued to tour without him, including a 1998 UK visit, but have never been able to achieve their former success, although it should be noted that their last release went Top 10 in Zimbabwe. Munhumumwe passed away in 2001.
