Book Description

5 Nov 2011
Cursed with endless drowsiness, Enchantress Hiresha sleeps more than she lives. Since she never has had a chance to raise a family, she sometimes feels like every woman is pregnant except for her. This time, she is right. From virgin to grandmother, all the women in her city have conceived. One unexpected pregnancy is a drama; fifty thousand is citywide hysteria. A lurking sorcerer drains power from the unnatural pregnancies, and Hiresha must track him by his magic. Unfortunately, her cultured education in enchantment ill equips her to understand his spellcraft, which is decidedly less than proper. The only person uncivilized enough to help is the Lord of the Feast, a dangerous yet charming illusionist. Associating with him may imperil Hiresha’s city, yet refusing his help will allow the sorcerer to leech godlike power from the mass births.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brood Of Bones 5 Sep 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Wow, what an amazing journey with the characters and story line! Plays on your mind in places, well written twists that I didn't always see coming. Left me hungry for more of the stories really hoping they are all ready forming in author's mind!
Not often you find a book with a completely new plot and this is definately new.
Brill and exciting read and if you haven't realised it yet I loved it and would recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual and fascinating 10 Dec 2012

I downloaded this book when A E Marling offered it for free on Twitter, although I did not read it at once; having recently been pregnant I could not deal with the thought of mass pregnancies all going wrong. When I overcame this however I was blown away. I absolutely loved this book.
AE Marling demonstrates a beautiful use of language, with a fantasy story set in a vividly envisaged world. I very much enjoyed his original take on magic and magical beings - Bright Palms, Feasters et al.
The story is told through the eyes of Hiresha, an Enchantress. Other reviews have complained that some of the other characterisation is 2D - I did not regard this as a flaw, but as an inevitable result of the story being so completely Hiresha's.
As soon as I finished reading Brood of Bones I downloaded its sequel, Fox's Bride. Now waiting for a third book, impatiently.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem of an introduction 30 Nov 2012
By PeterC
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
As the first book in what I hope will be an extended series I found Brood of Bones to be a great start. It introduced characters that grew throughout the novel yet left plenty of potential for future books. The prose was flowing despite being in the first person, a technique I often find jarring, and Marling's descriptions of the city of Morimound and it's inhabitants were colourful and vibrant. I would say this is a perfect novel for those new to fantasy as the series is still relatively new and not over-imbued with the back story of other series making it more accessible.
