Amazon.co.uk Review
Pulling off the passionate love story embedded in a truly epic narrative is a difficult thing to do. Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind remains the blueprint for the genre, while Tolstoy's War and Peace carries off the literary honours with the Pierre/Natasha/André ménage, itself a blueprint for Mitchell's Brett/Scarlett/Ashley musical chairs. Paullina Simons' ambitious The Bronze Horseman weighs in at nearly 700 pages, and it's quickly apparent that the Russian-born author has the measure of this kind of epic romantic saga. The power of her descriptive writing, the vividness of the historical detail and, most of all, the strength of her central characters mark out her novel as a considerable achievement.

Simons was born in Leningrad and emigrated to the US in the 1970s. She sets her love story in the war-torn Leningrad of 1941. Utilising as her setting this phantasmagoric city of decaying splendour, Simons expertly involves the reader in the fate of two sisters, Tatiana and Dasha, living a penurious existence with their brother and parents. Their lives are ineluctably changed when Hitler invades Russia in June 1941. On that day, Tatiana meets a confident and attractive young officer, Alexander. As the Russian winter wreaks its havoc and the bombs fall, Alexander and Tatiana struggle with their growing love in the face of death and destruction. Simons' most impressive coup here is to ensure that the troubled love affair at the centre of her narrative is not engulfed by the terrifying conflagration that surrounds her characters. Tatiana in particular is drawn with a truly felicitous grasp of character: idiosyncratic, strong-willed and charismatic, she possesses all the requisite qualities to support a tale such as this.

However, the author isn't content to merely soothe and stir the reader: by using Hitler's war machine on the one hand and the dehumanising Soviet system on the other, she is able to make some powerful statements about the durability of the human spirit, but never at the expense of descriptive passages refulgent with power and beauty:

The train station crumbled like wet paper. Tatiana crawled from the beams and the fire, but there was nowhere for her to go. Through the smoke she could feel bodies around her. Hot and faint, she felt for them with her hands. The gunfire came from right outside the door, but when the lattice beam fell from the ceiling, all sounds faded away, all faded away and there was no more fear. Only regret was left. Regret for Alexander.

Praise for Paullina Simons Tully 'Pick up this book and prepare to have your emotions wrung so completely you'll be sobbing your heart out one minute and laughing through your tears the next! Read it and weep -- literally' Company Tatiana and Alexander 'This has everything a romance glutton could wish for: a bold, talented and dashing hero, a heart-stopping love affair ! It also has -- thank goodness -- a welcome sense of humour and discernable characters rather than ciphers.' 5.0 out of 5 stars Should be a best seller and a prizewinner!, 15 Feb 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Bronze Horseman (Paperback)
This remarkable and highly satisfying love story is a must for any reader who enjoys, as well as an excellent plot and well developed and rounded characters, the stimulation of a broader context to a story. Starting at the outbreak of war between The Soviet Union and Germany in June 1941, the novel takes us through the horrors of the siege of Leningrad and into the war as it develops through 1942 and into 1943. But the historical aspects of the story should not put off lovers of romantic fiction, although they do give it impressive depth. The romantic protagonists, Tatiana and Alexander are realistic, sympathetic characters whose story will utterly grip the reader. It is difficult to read this novel without going through extremes of emotion - it is utterly compelling, uplifting and desperately sad, and yet brings a very profound message of hope. Paullina Simons, whose many fans have already found much to admire in her three earlier, very differing novels, has with "The Bronze Horseman" reached new heights - I challenge anyone not to admire and enjoy this book.

The romantic element of the novel excels, as I have said, because of the two central lovers. They are complemented by a surrounding cast of believable and carefully drawn characters, who make the whole personnel of the story very convincing. The plot is also very well crafted, and while it does dwell significantly on the very dark days of the Leningrad siege, it also includes a period of almost idyllic escapism which tempers and balances the horrors of the depiction of the war. Both elements are essential to the story being told, and give excellent structure to the plot. The story of the war and in particular the siege of Leningrad are, in my opinion, what makes this novel stand out above any other I have read in recent years. Many readers will have been unaware of the historical event taking place in the novel, but they have been carefully researched and are retold with a high degree of historical accuracy. It is clear that many first hand accounts have been used to give authenticity to the unfolding events, and perhaps it is this weaving of fact into the fiction that make this novel stay so much in the mind, even months after finishing it. I know of a number of people who, having read this book, have wanted to find out more of the real life events of the time - any reader of this review wanting to do this could use as a starting point Harrison E Salisbury's 'The 900 Days: The Siege of Leningrad". I can highly recommend this to any reader who wants to find out more about the events of "The Bronze Horseman".

If you love intelligent, satisfying fiction with real depth of plot and characterisation, you must buy and read this book! It should be a best seller and a prizewinner, and you will never forget it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never will I read a book as beautiful as this., 4 Jul 2002
This review is from: The Bronze Horseman (Paperback)
I feel truely spoilt, never will I read a book that envokes as much passion and feeling for the characters as this. A masterpiece of a story full of emotion, longing and heatache, happy times and hard times.

Tatia is an amazing young girl hopelessly in love with Alexander, as will you be too. Not being one for romantic novels - I was truely surprised, such a gritty heart wrenching tale of un-selfish un-dying love and passion throughout the second world war.

As a fan of war novels I was particuarlly impressed with the attention to detail and the perspective of seeing the war as it was in communist Russia.

Tatia is adorable, one of the only Simmons lead characters who is. All the expected Simmons vilians are there, but taken to a whole new level. I thought Red Leaves was the best Simmons book to date - but I was mistaken - this bok had me crying into the pages, desperate for Tatianas life to be the happy, harmonious one she deserves. I felt like I knew this girl, I wanted to know this girl, she has inspired me to be a better person - this novel is truely powerful - I can't believe it's fiction!!!

Congratualtions to Ms Simmons for her most outstanding book to date, roll on Bridge to Holy Cross if this epic is anything to go by. I can't say enough about this masterpiece of a story, but I don't want to give anything away.

Enjoy reading this and prepare to never want to put it down. Want to know how it ends, but be prepared to be devistated when it's finished, as when you finish you feel that something is missing. Never have I read a book that captivated me in such a way. Make it a film, blow Titanic out of the ocean, but hollywood boffs - if you make it don't ruin it - stay true to the story word for word - it simply can not be improved upon, and Simmons will be hard pushed to do better.

WOW!! This is a book dying to be read. A classic for the 21st Century.
