'I was born and broken in Birkenhead. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed and ignored. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim - that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix - a work in progress. This is my story.'

Shy wasn't meant to survive her childhood.

Her mother beat her so severely that Shy was deaf by her first day in school. She would have boiling water poured over her in punishment for wetting the bed. And virtually every day, from the age of four, Shy was raped by her stepfather, Stan.

When she was ten she was attacked so viciously by the gang of dockworkers Stan had sold her to that she was left for dead in a field, her skull fractured.

Six years ago her testimony secured the imprisonment of Stan and his associates for a catalogue of crimes against children. But it was only after a journey fraught with horror - stealing to survive on the streets of London, prison and a suicide bid.

Today, Shy is the internationally admired chief advocate for Phoenix Survivors, the campaigning group she founded with Sara Payne to fight for justice for victims of child sexual abuse. They have worked tirelessly with politicians, social services, the legal system and the media for justice for victims of child sex abuse.

BROKEN is the most hard-hitting memoir of overcoming abuse you will ever read. It is both a challenge and an inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars HEARTBREAKING 18 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read a couple of chapters of this book and wasn't sure if I could carry on with it as it is so upsetting what Shy had to endure, however I felt as though I must carry on with it. I could not stop thinking about it as it is truly horrific, how she got through it I will never be able to comprehend. I do not understand how anyone (especially a mother) could treat a child like that and as a nearly qualified social worker it shocked me to see what she was treated like by the 'caring professions' Social Workers, Care Workers etc;

PLEASE READ THIS BOOK as it is truly inspiring as Shy goes on to help people in a similar situation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shy Keenan is inspirational. 14 Oct 2008
Format:Hardcover
I wasn't sure at first if I would be able to read this book, but after putting it all into perspective (I could chose to put the book down but Shy Keenan had to live this life), I bit the bullet and was totally hooked from the first chapter. The majority of the time this book is extremely upsetting but my goodness what an inspiration this women is. Broken has enabled me to gain a better understanding of my own child's thoughts and emotions and because of Shy Keenan's brilliant writing, I feel as if I have become a better Mother. Upon finishing Broken I could not stop myself from absolutely sobbing, partly because of what a horrendous life Shy was forced to lead, but mainly because of the disgusting failings of the authorities that were suppose to be in place to help her. I had to keep reminding myself that this all happened in the last 44 years and not in the 1940/50's.
I have now passed this book to a friend, who has already been asked from a friend of hers if she can borrow it after. Shy Keenan is a trully remarkable and brave woman and from this, we can only all learn.
