I wasn't sure what to expect from this, but in the end I enjoyed it a lot. It builds to an exciting pace and has the mystery and plot twists you'd expect from a good thriller, but also leaves you thinking about human genetic research (of all things!) The treatment of that topic is a bit intrusive towards the end, but it's actually well integrated into the storyline & plot before that. I wondered did the author have some experience in bioethics - it seems to mean so much to him? The bioethical theme intrudes into the plot now and again, varying the pace of the action a bit - which can be good or bad depending on how you like your thrillers. The overall balance between exposition and action is pretty good though.
The settings (CIA HQ, Tokyo, Paris) seem well researched, as does the biotechnology. The details of Japanese culture added an extra layer to the story. The technology isn't too heavy, unlike some technothrillers I've read, and is explained well only where it is necessary. The characters are well developed, perhaps a bit over-developed in places for a thriller.
It's well written and there's enough in it for everyone to find something to enjoy. I liked the writing style and would read more from this author.
