Book Description

16 Jan 2014 A Jefferson Winter Thriller

The first in James Carol's thrilling Jefferson Winter series, Broken Dolls offers rapid-fire suspense and a chilling look into the mind of a criminal - and into the mind of the one man who might be able to catch him.

Ex-FBI star profiler Jefferson Winter is no ordinary investigator. An eccentric genius and self-described geek with a passion for Mozart, he is haunted by the legacy of his notorious serial killer father . . . and not likely to admit this may be why he has such a phenomenal insight into the psychology that drives the criminals he hunts.

The former G-man is now a sought after freelance consultant, jetting around the globe helping local law enforcement agencies with their toughest cases. When Detective Inspector Mark Hatcher calls from Scotland Yard about a particularly disturbing case, Winter leaves his native California for the chilly streets of London to help track down a sadistic serial kidnapper.

Four victims, all young women, all tortured and then lobotomised. None of them able to tell the police the name of their attacker. None of them able to live normal lives again. Just broken dolls, played with then discarded.

When another young woman goes missing, Winter has to race against the clock to identify the attacker and find the latest victim before it's too late.

James Carol's breakout debut novel takes readers on an action-packed rollercoaster ride that fans of Criminal Minds, Silence of the Lambs, Sleepy Head, and the Jack Reacher and Alex Cross series won't want to miss.

More Jefferson Winter Thrillers:

Jefferson Winter returns in Presumed Guilty (July 2014), the first in a series of ebook novellas chronicling Winter's FBI days, and Watch Me (August 2014), the second full-length novel in the Winter series.

Also in the works: Television rights for Broken Dolls have been optioned by Sprout Pictures, the production company behind the Emmy award winning SKY comedy Moone Boy. The company is planning to adapt the novel into a major TV series, provisionally titled WINTER.

Review

'If there's one thing I love, a guilty but undeniable pleasure, it's a cracking procedural serial murder thriller. Broken Dolls has it all. Horrifying evil, a brilliant, conflicted profiler and cracking pace and tension. I read it in what seemed like two trembling gulps.'

(Stephen Fry)

'Toe-clenching, nail-biting, peep-from-behind-your-fingers suspense.' (S. J. Bolton)

'Visceral and gripping, Broken Dolls made me gasp in horror. Jefferson Winter is a welcome new genius, and I can't wait to meet him again.' (Neil White)

A crazed serial killer, an eccentric FBI investigator,a tough female cop - all the ingredients here blend to make a brilliant police procedural. Jefferson Winter has to track down a psychopath whose fetish is to lobotomise women. The first of a series, this promises great, grisly things. (Deirdre O'Brien Sunday Mirror)

Strikingly well-researched and written with a real swagger, it leaves you desperate for more. (Daily Mail)

'The plot device of bringing together the investigation on one side, with Rachel's experience at the hands of her abductor is an effective one...a rapid fire read ' (Euro Crime)

'If you had enough of brooding Scandinavian crime novels, American thrillers are simply too showy and you've already checked out the latest offering by Ann Cleeves, the next logical step is to start reading the superb Broken Dolls, debut novel by James Carol. Broken Dolls is the first in the series of novels featuring investigator Jefferson Winter, a troubled man forever trying to escape from his troubled past . . . Due to its unforgiving, relentless pace I just couldn't close the book - even for a single second. With his troubled past and sociopathic brilliance Jefferson Winter is an excellent lead. All the way through the book I've felt like he would work perfectly on television. Little did I know that Stephen Fry's production company already bought the rights and soon enough we'll be seeing this fine investigator in action. In the meantime, the next instalment in the series can't come soon enough.' (upcoming4.me upcoming4.me)

5.0 out of 5 stars Very scary 9 Feb 2014

Brilliant, I was totally wrapped up in this book,to such an extent that whilst reading it, my mobile phone rang and I almost jumped out of my skin. It's a good thing that I was reading in bed because my Kindle went flying up in the air as I screamed. No harm done as the Kindle landed on the bed. This is a very tense story which I really enjoyed, didn't want to put it down. Excellent !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! 28 Jan 2014

Thrillers are my favourite genre, and this was one of the best I've read. Fast but not too fast, gripping, just the right amount of characters, just the right amount of tension - a proper ' race against time to catch a psychopath' tale, and I can't wait till the next in the series comes out - for a introduction to a new character , this was just great. Read it in three days, says it all.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good character - doesn't do England well 3 May 2014
By Stuart
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The character of Jefferson Winter has potential - I like his cynicism but the setting for this one was England and there were a couple of howlers. No suspect would have been interrogated the way he describes without a solicitor present and then there's the whole gun thing, but then the author is a yank so what do you expect. I'll maybe pick another Jefferson Winter story up and see how it goes

1.0 out of 5 stars Irritatingly trashy 15 May 2014
By Mrs P.
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The main protagonist, profiler Winter, is so two-dimensional that it is simply laughable. Especially his comments about women are so unbelievably mysogynistically cliché that his psychological expertise is very hard to believe. The fact that the whole novel is so extremely misogynistic (mind you, every woman appearing in the plot, including Sophie Templeton, the cop, becomes a helpless victim subjected to cruel torture) makes it just tasteless. I don't think James Carol should attempt at writing another book. Personally, I will definitely not attempt to read anything else committed by him anyway.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for me! 19 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Too unbelievable, almost a science fiction plot - and how the "profiler" came to some of his (obvious) conclusions was totallly unreal! on this effort, I wouldnt recommend this author, or indeed read any more by him.
