Synopsis

Capitalising on the success of films like SAW and HOSTEL, BROKEN gives the survive-or-die scenario an al fresco spin. The premise is somewhat familiar; a woman is abducted and taken to a remote part of the woods, where she is subjected to unthinkable torments by her cruel and sadistic captor. Her ordeal is made all the worse by not knowing her daughter’s whereabouts... or if indeed she’s still alive. Why any of this is happening is unclear, and it’s this apparent lack of motive that heightens the tension to an almost unbearable degree. Directors Simon Boyes and Adam Mason prove that you don’t need a huge budget to unnerve your audience; just a creepy setting and an inventive, albeit twisted, imagination.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tense, unpleasant, but not just another 'Saw'..., 21 Mar 2008
By Ms. Kl O'shea "the_bad_blood" (Bristol UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Of course 'Broken' opens itself up to criticism that it is just another 'torture porn' film (and who coined that term? It's not pornographic to me!) and yes, there are some similar elements. The female protagonist is inexplicably removed from the home she shares with her daughter to the middle of nowhere, where a sadistic and mentally-imbalanced woodsman threatens and cajoles her into slavery. But I think the obvious talents of both the director, and lead actress Nadja Brand, help to surpass the limitations of a tried-and-tested film formula. Brand is superb as the tormented mother and victim, evidently at her wits' end during this production, and this makes for a gripping and increasingly harsh performance. The setting is good - not to mention very English - and the villain actually strikes something of a balance between 'well-rounded' and 'nightmarish'. Essentially, 'Broken' pushes the limits of a very current, tried-and-tested horror idea, but reclaims it and makes it the cast/director's own. Elements of this film have stayed with me, where comparable films have all-but paled into insignificance. Recommended for genre fans with some wider idea of horror; not recommended for the sort of viewer who feels cheated if strobe lights and MTV references aren't high on the list of priorities.

How this director followed this with the self-referential nonsense of 'The Devil's Chair' will probably be considered by film historians one day...

5.0 out of 5 stars Cringe Factor = Wow, 21 Aug 2007
Was this real t.v. ???? We have seen a few low budget novies in the past and some were not even worth watching. Hollywood can spend millions on a bad movie but this one shows you how to make a really good one for about a tenner.
Not a lot i can say without giving away any of the plot, not that there is really a lot of a story line and if you really like cringe factor horror that will make you squirm, Get It!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad film, 21 Nov 2007
By Mr. N. D. Havers "neillhavers1973" (Liverpool) - See all my reviews

I quite liked this film. Its about a woman who is abducted by a madman and her life following this. The film only centres around 2 main characters. The acting is quite good and there is an element of suspense to the film. However, I felt the film could have been made a bit more exciting with a more interesting storyline than the one used. The ending is quite good but I wont spoil the details here. I wouldnt pay full price for this film but its worth getting in the sale.

1.0 out of 5 stars Broken - At least they got the title right
If you want to waste 90 minutes of your life then go ahead and watch this film. Story line - there was none, it showed as low budget which is never a good start, acting was pants.

1.0 out of 5 stars Low budget and it shows!
Just because it's low budget doesn't mean a film's going to be bad. That's my yardstick anyway, hence I was quite looking forward to watching this DVD. Read more
