Product Description

While he’s still a baby, Mark Doughty’s family is torn apart by domestic violence. With his abusive father in police custody and his mother institutionalised, Mark is abandoned to an indifferent care system. Only one concerned social worker, Jackie Shannon, attempts to connect with him during a bleak childhood, but her attentions aren’t enough to prevent him from gradually hardening into a man whose only means of communication is through violence and intimidation. Doughty’s frustration with his dead-end life finally culminates in a brutal and unprovoked murder.
His arresting officer, DI Jack Hogg, is pleased to see Doughty put away for life. But his worst fears are realised when Mark escapes from custody, obsessed with exacting retribution on the people he feels are responsible for his incarceration.

Synopsis

Abandoned to an indifferent care system from a life torn apart by domestic violence, Mark Doughty gradually grows into a hard and violent man. Put behind bars for murder he escapes from custody, obsessed with exacting retribution on the people he feels responsible for his incarceration.

"Gritty and gripping" would be my summation and it's hard to put down once it gets going, which is pretty much straight away!

It has a no-nonsense style which I really liked and evokes a real sense of Britishness, and of time and place as the story progresses through the years. It doesn't shy away from the violence and can be quite a tough read at times, but it's done well and you genuinely care about the characters. What raises it above many books in the genre is the thought-provoking exploration of what made Doughty turn out the way he did, not just a focus on what drives the good guys. Having said that, DI Hogg is a great character!

Would definitely recommend this to anyone who's into crime thrillers.

An Excellent Read 17 May 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Although fast paced and exciting enough to please fans of crime/thriller novels, Broken Cats and Cowboy Hats is not your average plot driven crime novel. The characters, in particular Mark Doughty himself, have a depth to them that so often can be missing in contemporary literature. That depth arouses our sympathy, maybe even empathy, and certainly offers an explanation as to why Mark behaves as he does. It would be too easy to condemn Doughty, too easy to catagorise him as the criminal and Mr Knowle's writing does not take that easy option. Is Doughty the criminal, or is Mark the real victim? A question we could, maybe even should, be asking ourselves in today's society.

This novel makes you think and is certainly worthy of the 'page turner' label. However it is more. It makes you think certainly, but it also makes you feel something. And it is that feeling which will remain long after the last page has been turned.

I highly, highly recommend this work.

After reading my first Knowles (The Association) I was inspired to read another one. And I am glad I did because Broken Cats & Cowboy Hats, although very different to The Association, was just as gripping. I found myself, again, completely engaged with the story line as it developed. This one evoked a great many emotions and thoughts in me - about the nature of human beings, the capacity to love and the potentially devastating consequences of a series of minor failures. I am off to read my next Knowles - The Naked Emperor. I'm hoping that this one will be as good as the other two I've read. The author's versatility displayed in The Association and Broken Cats already reassures me that it will be!

Hard hitting tragedy
This gritty and hard hitting tragedy was well written and although some of the images could be described as harrowing they were never gratuitous. Read more

Quite suspenseful but rather trite
I bought this on the strength of the excellent reviews. However,I thought it tried too hard to follow the recent spate of 'my tragic childhood' autobiographies. Read more
