Product Description

"Excellent, entertaining, and extremely well written . I couldn't stop reading!"-Phil Hellmuth, poker icon and author of Play Poker Like the Pros

Forget Wall Street-America's best and brightest now seek their fortunes at the poker tables. Broke: A Poker Novel follows the lives of three talented, young poker players as they chase fame and fortune in a world fraught with addiction.

Raf Verheij is a twenty-five-year-old match prodigy who likes to think that his current situation is unique: poker pulled him out of a deep hole instead of leading him into one. Robert Thompson is a player who has an almost supernatural ability-reading opponents' hands by taking cues from their body language-and a huge gambling problem. And finally, there's Matt Ingram, a grinder with a penchant for all things self-destructive.

It's a world where the individual has to worry less about the problems that others will cause him than the problems that he will cause for himself. Broke looks into the lives of Raf, Robert, and Matt in their high-stakes quest for gaining poker legend status and reveals just how addictive and dangerous the world of poker can be to one's bankroll and mental health.

Poker should make a good novel, but rarely does. Broke tries to do for internet poker kids what Jesse May did for older school rounders in Shut Up and Deal: give an insight into the addictive, repetitive, action-filled, inactive lives of professional poker players. But it has none of the poetry or punk attitude of May's book, no colour, and no characters. About as inspiring and insightful as one of the less literary poker blogs, it's one to be avoided.

don't bother 14 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
Brought this book as i love to read anything about poker. The first impression was dissappointment because i found the book to be only 88 pages long which i can read in about half an hour but as it turned out this was a blessing in disguise as i wouldn't have made it much futher.Reading the write up i thought this book would be about 3 poker players that gave up there day jobs to pursue a career as pro poker players. This very loosely was the content of the book but it gave us no background on the players themselves and how they became pro players. So because you knew nothing about them you found yourself not really caring about them or what happened to them.It just gives a brief synopsis of a few months in there lives. As there are hundreds of other poker books on the market save your money and spend it on a something else.

I read this book over two days, waiting for it to get going....but it didn't it just ended. If you are going to read this then make sure you have read some of the great poker books first otherwise you might not bother to read another. (Big Deal, Super System, The P the B and S king etc)
