Product Description

Product Description

This volume examines some of the best ancient monuments in Britain - the iron age brochs of north & west Scotland. It sets the building of these fortifications into context & looks at some of the theories that have been proposed for their origins.'

About the Author

Graham Ritchie graduated in prehistoric archaeology from Edinburgh University, subsequently undertaking research in Celtic weapons. With his father, W. F. Ritchie, he wrote the volume on 'Celtic Warriors' for the Shire Archaeology series. Since 1965 he has been on the staff of the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland, where he is now Head of Archaeology, and has undertaken field survey and excavation in many parts of Scotland, particularly in Argyll and Orkney.

5.0 out of 5 stars a small but accurate appraisal of the brochs of scotland, 5 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Brochs of Scotland (Shire Archaeology) (Paperback)
This is a small book that gives both gazeteer information and an accurate depiction of the historical positioning of brochs, their influence and their use. The development from duns, roundhouses and other similar structures is discussed and put into perspective. The lothian and SW scotland connection is also discussed.
This is the best book i have so far found on this subject, i would also recomend the shell guide to archaeology if you can find it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating as well as a practical, 23 April 2011

This review is from: Brochs of Scotland (Shire Archaeology) (Paperback)
The unusual as well as fascinating derelict towers dotted around Scotland have long held the curious in thrall for centuries. Yet very little research has really gone into them leaving the modern viewer with more than a few questions as to the origins as well as practical application to their structure. What this book reveals is the uses of these ancient fortifications as well as clearly demonstrating the defensive as well as building skills required by the ancients in their constructions. Its fascinating, it's a real delve into the curio of these constructs and a wonderful look into a past that is restricted to the highlands rather than all over the UK. A great addition and with the use of illustrations, diagrams and of course a little common sense make use of these ancient constructs.
