Product Description

Product Description

San Francisco duo Myron & E create modern soul music with a classic throwback feel, set to release their debut on Stones Throw Records, Broadway. Myron & E are backed by Timmion Records house band The Soul Investigators, who worked with them on a string of 45s released on Timmion in recent years, as well as with Nicole Willis. Broadway is produced entirely by Didier Selin of the Soul Investigators. We maintain a relationship with classic soul, Myron says. To me, that was the greatest music that ever existed. There were hundreds of groups back then that were never discovered, but are phenomenal. We're trying to keep the spirit of that alive. Songs like Broadway and Give You All My Love may boast classic soul instrumental and vocals, but modern production and unforgettable hooks bring the sound up to date. With their release of Broadway on Stones Throw, Myron & E affirm the cult US indie label s standing as a hub for modern soul music that appeals to a range of audiences, following in the footsteps of recent successes Aloe Blacc and Mayer Hawthorne.

It's pure soul and it's on Stones Throw! I love Stones Throw but only found that this existed (or that they released stuff that wasn't hip-hop) until I bought the Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton. To the guy that thinks it's a bit cobbled together, are you a 70's soul nut? Not putting you down as you are clearly a fan. But I have loads of LP's and 90% of them you probably have to skip 3 or more tracks. Sometimes a whole side. I have spent in the past 80 on an LP for the one amazing track.

The only consistently great albums that come to mind were made by Marvin, Curtis Mayfield, Leroy Hutson, Leon Ware, Barry White (I know, controversial but he was a genius. Listen to Sings For The One I Love), The Natural Four, Stevie Wonder. Others - Is It Because I'm Black Syl Johnson, Do You Have The Time - The Younghearts. Even Lamont Dozier who has made tons of brilliant tracks made only one classic album, Love And Beauty. What I'm getting at is if this was discovered today it would be an instant classic and if it was rare people would spend a lot of money on it. I personally think it's a fantastic album, mainly midtempo 2-step style, a very good Disco track (you should hear Curtis Mayfield's attempts at disco...painful), and a great psychedelic soul track in Back and Forth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hmmmmm! 14 Aug 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Some great tracks, particularly the singles; however, the album seems a bit cobbled together. There is no rhythm... it lacks a sense of direction. Don't get me wrong; when Myron & E are good they are great... and there are a lot of high points, but when they're not they are mediocre at best. Disappointed further that the UK vinyl version didn't contain the free 7"

5.0 out of 5 stars If you liked AMY WINEHOUSE's "Back To Black"... 9 July 2013
By Eddie Landsberg - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Fans of classic late 60s/early 70s SOUL (think Brunswick!) and Black radio soundchecks (Remember Sonny Hopson?) -- and people who loved AMY WINEHOUSE's retro-soul style, will REALLY find this album to be a rare gem. In fact, its one of the few recent releases I've bought in ages (If it wasn't originally released on vinyl in the 70's or before, I rarely listen.)

The group consists of two guys... Both are stylistically compatible, though one is more old school than the other.
The style of Myron is sort of a mix of Eddie Kendricks/Marvin Gaye and Smokie Robinson --
The younger guy is into that, but you can tell has also been listening to a lot of the younger R&B singers (who sometimes have a bit more of a nasal off tone vibe at times.)

The back-up band (apparently a Finnish group) is convincingly "retro soul" to a tee, as are the production values.

With an emphasis on groovy, but mellow soul, the album is a straight through listen.
Do not expect today's POST URBAN CONTEMP/hip hop influences... and don't expect hard core funk or disco...
instead, expect a great session that sort of reminds me of Marvin Gaye's WHAT'S GOING ON album.

Let me explain the comparison... Many of the tracks on that album sounded similar (as this does), but it flowed right through, and was a side to side listen.
This is quite similar in that its coherently produced -- although the tempo and changes to a lot of the tunes are similar it WORKS fantastically...

My two favorite cuts are ON BROADWAY ond DO IT DO IT disco... I chuckle at times realizing how much these guys understand the style, yet am relieved that they are revisiting it with their own voice and creativity -- as a result the production is effortless.\

Now comes the big question... will it catch on???

I hope so...

5.0 out of 5 stars These two keep soul "fresh." 31 July 2013
By Steven L. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
From the moment you "drop the needle" (a.k.a. "press play") on this new release from the duo known as "Myron & E," you'll picture yourself in that late night club, with men in suits and fedoras and ladies in flower-print, knee-length dresses, alternating between slow-motion grinds and dance moves to the smooth beats that permeate "Broadway," the debut set from these soulful performers.

Myron Glasper and Eric "E da Boss" Cooke make up this talented team of singer and DJ who bring their cross-country influences to their record, with Myron's roots in the Los Angeles sound becoming complete once Cooke moved from New York (by way of Virginia) to join his partner in the Bay Area. With the instrumental augmentation of Finland's Nicole Willis and the Soul Investigators, the act have put together a high-quality, hip-swingin' ten-song compilation, are currently touring in support of their album along with other artists on the Stones Throw label, and deserve to be heard.

Their sound is a fresh take on the classic days of Al Green, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, and the funky soul of the 1960's and 1970's Bay Area. The first single from the album, "If I Gave You My Love," receives inspiration from Redding's "Dock of the Bay;" "Cold Game" owes it's string arrangements to Berry Gordy and the Motown sound, and there's even "Do It Do It Disco," which could have been spun by the DJ's playing 12" records from the Casablanca label in 1978. Stones Throw Records, the 17-year old label fronted by Peanut Butter Wolf, is also pressing a limited number of LP's for this release. If you (still) own a record player, complete your immersion in this "Broadway" sound by picking up this release on vinyl.
