American plays embellished with songs were being offered in New York as early as Colonial days, but The Black Crook was the first long-running musical hit, with a record run that was not overtaken until Adonis established a new mark in the Iate1880's. Read the first page

3.0 out of 5 stars The Official Broadway Musical Reference Book, 22 Aug 1998
By A Customer
This is a great reference book I use to keep track of what's happening on Broadway, and check out the inside stories. I can't give it a perfect 5 star since, it does seem to skimp on details that I would like to see (an ultimate complete detailed book of every broadway show would be nice). The book is updated with new editions and I have them all, but the information isn't always as updated as I would like it to be (current book doesn't include things like Lion King, J&H, Titanic, etc.) Reading about the earlier Broadway shows is interesting and contains information you probably won't find anywhere else, although, I wish the revival shows would have more information than a basic "ditto" from the original performance. However, if it is really meant to be a reference book, then it succeeds in that business without really trying. If you're looking for more, as I am, then maybe someday someone will do the research to provide that resource, otherwise, this is the best you can expect for now.

3.0 out of 5 stars Warning - misleading blurb, 12 Jan 2009
By D. Nurdin "nurdind" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a good book, I hung on until the 6th edition was published, and have at long last got my hands on it. However, much to my disappointment there was nothing on The Boy from Oz - despite it being mentioned in the review.
