First appearing in 1985, this is the sixth edition - Stephen Green's widow Kay taking over the baton since 1993. Shows are listed in chronological order, from 1866's "The Black Crook" to "Xanadu" of 2007. 500+ performances are the criterion, unless a show is deemed extra special.
Everything is very scholarly, emphasis on facts rather than opinion.
Some may wish for more zest and involvement (for example, assessing the scores rather than simply listing the numbers). There could also be better quality paper and photographs (although these no doubt would have caused the price to soar).
Such reservations aside, there is much to interest and to please (not least the revelation Richard Rodgers' grandson is making impact). Invaluable for reference and contented browsing, the reader likely to emerge surprised at how much time has passed.
