Amazon.co.uk Review

Holly Hunter plays a network news producer who, much to her chagrin, finds herself falling for pretty-boy anchorman William Hurt. He is all glamour without substance and represents a hated shift from hard news toward packaged "infotainment", which Hunter despises. Completing the triangle is Albert Brooks, who provides contrast as the gifted reporter with almost no presence on camera. He carries a torch for Hunter; she sees merely a friend. Written and directed by James L. Brooks, Broadcast News shows remarkable insight into the people who make television. On the surface the film is about that love triangle. If you look a little deeper, however, you will see that this behind-the-scenes comedy is a very revealing look at obsessive behaviour and the heightened emotions that accompany adrenaline addiction. It is for good reason this was nominated for seven Academy Awards (though it did not win any). There are scenes in this movie you cannot shake, such as Hunter's scheduled mini-breakdowns, or Brooks' furious "flop sweat" during his tryout as a national anchor. Watch for an uncredited Jack Nicholson as a senior newscaster. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Synopsis

James Brooks directs this satirical comedy about three ambitious TV newscasters. Tom Grunick (William Hurt), a rising anchorman, has plenty of on-camera savvy, personality and good looks but little in the way of brains. He may be dumb as a doornail but Tom's got the star presence his network needs. Then there's Aaron Altman (Albert Brooks), a less than good-looking newsman, who's dedicated, diligent and down-to-earth. Aaron would love to be an anchor but he freezes up the moment he's in front of the camera, sweating profusely. Smart news producer Jane Craig (Holly Hunter) is excellent at her job but has difficulty handling the pressure. Can these workaholics mask their personal quirks long enough to jump-start their professional lives

5.0 out of 5 stars Drama with a heart and mind., 25 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This is simply a fabulous film! Essentially this is a love triangle between three workers at a Washington news station, played by Holly Hunter, William Hurt and Albert Brooks. Without going into plot details, this film stands up to many repeat viewings due to the wonderful script and direction of James L. Brooks - a man who should make far more movies. The dialogue is clever, intelligent and witty, depicting fully rounded characters in very human dilemas. As well as tugging at the heartstrings this film also has some standout comic moments - Joan Cusack's mad dash with the video tape across the station springs immediately to mind. But what brings the entire thing together are career best performances from the main cast - particularly Hunter's, who has never been more funny and charming. At a bargin price buy this movie now! Or alternatively wait like me with baited breath for the region 2 DVD.
