Amazon.co.uk Review

Holly Hunter plays a network news producer who, much to her chagrin, finds herself falling for pretty-boy anchorman William Hurt. He is all glamour without substance and represents a hated shift from hard news toward packaged "infotainment", which Hunter despises. Completing the triangle is Albert Brooks, who provides contrast as the gifted reporter with almost no presence on camera. He carries a torch for Hunter; she sees merely a friend. Written and directed by James L. Brooks, Broadcast News shows remarkable insight into the people who make television. On the surface the film is about that love triangle. If you look a little deeper, however, you will see that this behind-the-scenes comedy is a very revealing look at obsessive behaviour and the heightened emotions that accompany adrenaline addiction. It is for good reason this was nominated for seven Academy Awards (though it did not win any). There are scenes in this movie you cannot shake, such as Hunter's scheduled mini-breakdowns, or Brooks' furious "flop sweat" during his tryout as a national anchor. Watch for an uncredited Jack Nicholson as a senior newscaster. --Rochelle O'Gorman

This is simply a fabulous film! Essentially this is a love triangle between three workers at a Washington news station, played by Holly Hunter, William Hurt and Albert Brooks. Without going into plot details, this film stands up to many repeat viewings due to the wonderful script and direction of James L. Brooks - a man who should make far more movies. The dialogue is clever, intelligent and witty, depicting fully rounded characters in very human dilemas. As well as tugging at the heartstrings this film also has some standout comic moments - Joan Cusack's mad dash with the video tape across the station springs immediately to mind. But what brings the entire thing together are career best performances from the main cast - particularly Hunter's, who has never been more funny and charming. At a bargin price buy this movie now! Or alternatively wait like me with baited breath for the region 2 DVD.

Masterpiece 21 April 2011

Super-intelligent, totally unpredictable, deeply charming. One of the greatest rom-coms and probably the best movie about TV news values. Plus it has a bunch of wonderful actors doing career-best work. There is nothing wrong with this film.

What, no fans? 24 Aug 2010

Format:DVD
It's amazing that this has only two reviews. It is an excellent film, with strong characters and kicks against the grain. Naturally Holly is superb, but Brooks and Hurt(playing against type) also do well.

A searing indictment of the age, even more so now, of style over content. Don't call people obsessive.
