Too theoretical 20 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
This book tells you most of what you need to know to be a broadcast journalist. But it's only for a broadcast journalist in the old-fashioned sense of the word. It tells you things like how to ask questions in an interview, how to gather information, how to write news reports...

The book, however, says nothing at all about filming, nothing on voice-recording, nothing on editing. And in this day and age when more and more people in the media need to multi-task there is nothing which covers actual production. There isn't even a section which covers the visual conventions that every journalist should know so that he doesn't piss off his cameraman and editor every time they go out filming.

Yes, there is plenty of useful information here, but outside of a newsroom or a documentary team, most of it comes across as too theoretical. And if you are in a newsroom or working with a documentary team, you'll probably pick most of this up in less time than it would take you to read the book.

For the money this book is the best total guide to the broadcast journalism industry. Recent examples give it a relevancy and it's very accessible.
