I suppose this CD is a bit of a "specialist" purchase. If you're looking for a recording of "Noye's Fludde", you might be a bit stuck to find anything else, and this will do a very serviceable job. David Wilson-Johnson is a solid Noah, if lacking in real drama, and Catherine Wyn-Rogers is a good scold as Noah's wife. The orchestra plays well and the children's choir acquits itself tidily. However, it's not a piece that really lends itself to sitting down and listening to with any great enthusiasm. True, there are some good moments, but it's best seen on stage, where the scale of the show is very impressive.
The disc is filled up with the Ceremony of Carols, which is definitely a finer work than "Noye", but I can't see any reason to buy this CD if you want a recording of this. There are many better recordings made by professional choirs and cathedral choirs.
