This disc is a great introduction to the shorter choral works of Finzi, Britten, and Holst. The two major works on the disc--Finzi's "Requiem da Camera" and Britten's "Cantata misericordium"--deserve many more performances than they normally receive. The third movement of the Requiem, "Only a man harrowing clods," in particular, is quite haunting. The Holst Psalm-settings are inventive as well.
The performances are first-rate, as is the recording--the singing is quite clear and distinct, perhaps as a result of the small numbers of the Britten Singers. The soloists do an excellent job, and are well-teamed in the Cantata.
