I have an ongoing search for the songs we learned is school in the 20`s and 30`s. Many still elude me! This disc offered hopes, some were fulfilled. Too often the same old songs are recycled under a new title. What is on the disc is fine but I fear I still have a long way to go to collect all the songs I remember. I fear I may already be too late.

I got this for communal gatherings in a sheltered housing development. It's great, also for background music and breaks the ice amongst shy people.

Its said that England unlike Scotland or Ireland ignored its own folk music. So it was left to scholars and classical musicians to start the ball rolling.
One scholar-Cecil Sharp-travelled to America to research and document American folk songs and others would follow such as A P Carter and Jean Ritchie.A great deal of what they discovered had actually come from England and in some cases could even be traced back to Nursery Rhymes from the 17th century.
In fact classical singers doing Nursery Rhymes may have been the first rumblings of what was to become an industry in its own right by the end of the century
Eventually these folk songs would be sung by legitimate opera singers like Peter Pears and Kathleen Ferrier and recorded in arrangements by Benjamin Britten at a time just before Beatlemania
It was changing rapidly by the end of the 60s when Fairport Convention,Steeleye Span and the Albion Band began to record long forgotten English folk songs.
But while there was a definite Folk revival in the States it took longer for it to come through in the U K

In the year of centenary of Britten's birth I have enlarged my collection of Britten and like this one a lot - you can clearly see some of his influences - but it is an enjoyable cd and to be recommended.
