A welcome reissue 9 May 2013
By Kevin Lash - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Decca Eloquence, an Australian label, here brings us the first CD reissue of a 1964 Argo record: Part Songs by Benjamin Britten (Elizabethan Singers, Louis Halsey conducting). The performance is quite good, but the disc is most notable for the young composer's two 1933 pieces entitled I Lov'd A Lass and (especially) Lift Boy, the latter a wonderfully unusual Robert Graves setting for SATB & piano, which have *never* been commercially recorded by any other ensemble. This must be rare in Britten's choral output, which generally is very highly regarded and plentiful on disc, as is the case with the rest of this program. (For the track list, see the MP3 version - it's not on amazon yet, but it's up on UK amazon here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009JARTW4/. The descriptor "two two-part songs" is a typo, as these are 4-part SATB works.) Paul Spicer and his Finzi Singers probably intended to include these rarities if their "Britten: Choral Edition" series on Chandos had come to full fruition.

Completists can be glad to have this repertory finally issued on CD; even such a small gap in the discography seems strange for a composer of Britten's stature, and hopefully this will alert more choral enthusiasts to Lift Boy, which really is a gem.
