The poorest 'Ceremony' I have ever heard.,
By
This review is from: Britten: Ceremony of Carols (Audio CD)
Benjamin Britten's 'Ceremony of Carols' is one of the masterpieces of the 20th Century. How sad, therefore, that the only recording conducted by Britten himself should be such a soggy disappointment. What on earth posessed him to have it performed by a Danish Choir when the piece is in English (and some Latin), I cannot imagine. Their diction is dire (understandable) and their tuning is abysmal (unforgivable)! The other pieces on the CD are fine - the classic recording of 'Friday Afternoons' sounds as fresh and vibrant as it did the day it was recorded. However, if you want a recording of 'The Ceremony of Carols' look elsewhere. This one is little more than a historical curiosity.

Poor tuning of Copenhagen Boys but OK otherwise,

Britten's Ceremony of Carols is one of my favourite piece of choral music but there is a surprisingly limited choice of recordings available. This record by the Copenhagen Boys is truely disppointing. The tuning is appalling throughout and announciation (understandably!) is bad. However, the rest of the album is more satisfying.

The Friday Afternoon performances are wonderful,

......but then I would say this, as I was a fresh-faced member of the Downside school choir, in the mid-1980's when this recording was made.... :)
