The friendship between Britten and Rostropovich is well documented. We are hugely fortunate that it gave rise to Britten's being inspired to write extensively for the cello: his three solo suites, together with the Cello Symphony and the sonata for cello and piano, form a major addition to the wider oeuvre for this deeply romantic instrument. The case for the large-scale Cello Symphony never seems to me to be comprehensively proven, a view that's probably supported by the relative rarity of its appearance on concert schedules. But the four smaller scale works, three of which appear here, are all masterpieces. The three pieces for solo cello, along with Kodaly's fabulous and sadly neglected solo sonata (perhaps because it's pretty fiendish to play), form the first substantial serious new music for the instrument since Bach's six great suites.

Rostropovich gives them more than his usual passionate brilliance. He's a passionate man (who will ever forget the image of him playing his cello on the streets of a reforming Russia?) but this music surely has a uniquely special place in his great heart. That undoubtedly comes over in the playing.

The music is wonderful to match. This is a historic disc. I have no hesitation in commending it to you most warmly.

Dynamic playing, intensity of Rostropovich's sound is unmatched. 18 Oct 2006
By E. Jeremy Gershfeld - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
If you are a fan of the cello repetoire, this CD is a must. Britten's cello suites are definitely influenced by Bach's cello suites, especially with regard to the structure of the works. His cello muse (Rostropovich) has encouraged Britten to explore the dark and textured sounds of the modern cello. This recording gives permanence to some of the best cello playing I have ever heard. The Sonata with Britten at the piano is magnificent as well.

Meloncholy Beauty 26 Nov 2009
By Joe Anthony - Published on Amazon.com

This music demonstates the what the cello is capable of doing when pushed to the limits. Britten's compositions call for emotion, expressiveness, but also a wide range of colors. The cello is often plucked, making it sound almost lute-ish. As always with Britten, this music is curiously modern AND romantic at the same time. There is also a certain intimacy about the solo suites where Rostropovich just seems to know the composer's refined English mind so well and express it in his own sad Russian soulful style. It is real meloncholy beauty.

It just goes to show how much can be done with the cello when in teh hands like a master such as Mstislav Rostropovich (and Ben Britten).

The missing third 18 Jun 2008
By György Marosi - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Beautiful music played heavenly...
Britten's cello works come often in my hands on different CD-s. Either one of the 3 suites as part of a compilation, mostly all three as they belong together. Does anybody know the reason why Rostopowich plays only two suites? (I at least could not find any recording with him performing all at once...)
