A tremendous new recording, made at a live performance at the Barbican, London, of Britten's Billy Budd. A very strong cast, with Bostridge as Starry Vere, means that it is a pleasure from beginning to end. I was there at the performance, and although it was a concert performance (rather than a staged one) it was completely draining in its emotional intensity. Makes you realise what a great composer Britten was.

Billy Budd : peut-être le meilleur opéra de ce compositeur et dans une interprétation aussi distanciée qu'exacte

I gave this to a friend as a gift and he adores it. He especially loves Ian Bostridge's performance as Vere

This live recording of Billy Budd is a triumph. Not a work i knew terribly well, this recording is so full of life and emotion you can really picture everything that's happening.

Ian Bostridge conveys the scholarly Vere, but still show the iron will beneath the surface. Nathan Gunn as Budd is exciting and thrilling, his "Billy Budd, the King of the Birds" is wonderful. Claggart is as menacing as any I have heard.

The orchestra plays with great verve; the lead in to "Blow Her Away" is absolutely amazing. Huge and wonderful sound.

I saw this opera at Covent Garden some years ago when I had heard that it was being performed to half-empty houses. So, I booked a ticket (easily! and so unusual for Covent Garden) and sat in a half empty house. I was very impressed, but not so much as I was by Peter Grimes which I had seen at the old Sadlers Wells. I later bought a DVD of Billy Budd and was further impressed. It is now accepted as a masterpiece. I have only heard the first part of this recording but have no hesitation in giving it five stars. Daniel Harding is an excellent conductor who is not heard often enough in this country. All the soloists are outstanding (it seems a long time since it was thought that no one but Peter Pears could sing the parts written for him), the LSO plays wonderfully and the recording is demonstration worthy.
