Product Description

CD Description

This is a live recording of a performance given by the English Opera Group, conducted by the composer, in the Theatre Royal, Copenhagen on 15th September 1949. The tape is a miraculous survivor and, given its age and the circumstances of its making, the sound quality is remarkably good. It is a fascinating and unique document, coming only two years after the first performance of the opera and with eleven members of the original cast in the team.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not inaudible, 26 Jul 2009
By P. C. Boswell (Sussex England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this last year while the opera was being performed at Glyndebourne. The balance on the recording is very similar to what you hear in the opera house so you may need to boost the volume depending on your quality of hearing. All but one singers are the same as at the Glyndebourne premier so this is a very important historical document. But it is more than that it is hugely enjoyable. The 'upper class' English accents are cut-glass so you can identify instantly which characters are upstairs and which downstairs.
One caveat. The recording was made on a single spool tape recorder so there are small gaps when the spools were changed. This made me wonder whether to withhold a star but it is such an enjoyable performance it must get top rating.

2.0 out of 5 stars inaudible, 29 May 2009
By Gary Robinson "Provox" (Manitoba, Canada) - See all my reviews
If you're interested in know what the Britten did as a conductor with his own composition in terms of tempo, then this might be useful. Otherwise, it is not of much use. Most of the singers are often inaudible, or at best barely heard, and even the orchestra sounds way off in the distance.
