As an ex boy chorister myself my allegiance is more often than not with the unique sound that a good treble choir bring to this music which was of course written specifically for boys voices. However, the Trinity girl sopranos have an unmatched beauty and accuracy in these Christmas gems. In the Ceremony of Carols listen to their purity of tone and intonation in "There is no rose" or the whiplash precision of "This little babe". "Wolcum Yole" is properly joyous and i could go on...
They're voices are vibrato-less and boy-like whilst also being warmer and easier on the ear. Trinity choir built an enviable reputation under Richard Marlowe's inspired direction and are currently enjoying a new era of recording excellence with the equally inspired Stephen Layton.
Rejoice in the Lamb is given an equally marvellous performance making this budget cd a real bargain. Unless you are determined to have boys voices only in this repertoire then this disc should be on your shelf.
