It is hard to review something so familiar. This CD is taken from 2 lp records. The Philip Ledger recordings from 1974 were coupled with a gorgeous performance of Bernstein's Chichester Psalms with James Bowman as an incomparable soloist - not sure if it is on current release.
I have read that Britten preferred a more "earthy" treble sound than the refined ones produced by Kings College Cambridge. However, this has never put me off. The music on this CD is so attractive.
My first exposure to all the music on this CD was from these performances. I have heard many others and have to say that they still stand out as stunningly musical and expressive performances. Not only are they beautifully performed, they also have the advantage of having been recorded in the chapel of Kings College Cambridge, one of the most lovely acoustics to make music.
