Book Description

1 July 2010
Enjoy the 'quiet' roads of Brittany, following old railway tracks and canal tow-paths.
Major engineering achievements in their time, Brittany's waterways and narrow gauge railways could not compete with an improving road system. Overlooked and neglected for decades, these ready-made arterial routes have recently been revived as 'Green Ways', a major leisure resource and network of cycle paths right across Brittany, free from motor traffic.
This guide maps the major part of the current network of Green Way routes, shows how Green Ways integrate with roads, logs the facilities in place, shows the liaisons with other leisure routes and circuits for walkers and cyclists and provides a directory of overnight accommodation.
Also included are gradient profiles, details of places of interest nearby, a distance chart and journey planner and a list of all the Green Way routes.
For historical interest there is a chapter on the Railways of Brittany, their development and decline, as well as a map showing the currently operating railway system alongside the now defunct lines, many of which have become Green Ways.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book 11 Sep 2012

We just returned from Brittany and used this book on one occasion, although hoping to return to try further paths. The book is well laid out and provides good advice along the way. Worth noting that it does warn that paths can be closed down, for no apparent reason, which happened to us. Luckily we weren't too far along and managed to retrace our steps and cycle along the other side of the canal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful 9 Sep 2012

Each page of this sturdy little book has a description of about 15km of cycle track, including notes about the surface you'll be on, as well as a little diagram of the rise and fall in the track. The sections join up so if you want a longer ride, you can easily create one. Once on the ride, it was easy to see where you had got to, and to work out where might be a good place to stop to eat baguette sandwiches. Whilst many of the routes are shown on the Michelin road maps, some are not, and you get a lot more detail in the book. We were staying near Dinan and had a bike rack for our car, and were within easy reach of three different "there and back" rides on canal towpaths or converted railway lines. Money well spent.
