Product Description

The unique bonus of Brittany is a vibrant celtic heritage, revealed in its language, music, dance, colourful local festivals, religious traditions and mystical sites. Highlights from the region plus hints and tips from local people on where to go and what to do, including Broceliande, the Carnac megaliths, the lively streets of Quimper and the tiny, but beautiful Ile de Sein. You can discover great days out and perfect picnic spots as well as the author's personal recommendations on places, activities, driving routes and city walks, plus a month-by-month guide to the pros and cons of visiting at certain times of year. And you certainly won't be disappointed when you set off and discover the medieval towns, seafood, surfing beaches and wild landscapes of this inviting corner of France.

About the Author

Wendy Mewes lives in the wilds of Finistere. A love of history and landscape drives the themes of her published work, which includes Discovering the History of Brittany, Walking the Brittany Coast: Morlaix to Benodet, Crossing Brittany (a travelogue based on walking the Nantes-Brest canal) and The Five of Cups, a novel set in the Monts d'Arree. She runs the Brittany Walks website and works extensively promoting the understanding of Breton history and landscape to anglophones through talks, courses and guided events. She has been filmed for regional TV in France, and has broadcast a historical series for local radio.

This is an appealing publication, as attractive in its writing and content as in its outward appearance. Pretty surely everything you might need to know about Brittany, both before you go and when you are actually on holiday, is here. The overview at the beginning has a comprehensive section on the region's highly individual history, but sensibly it gives equal weight to the present and what you might practically find in terms of shopping, walking, festivals or water-sports today. Beyond that each area is described in detail, and the text is peppered with lively inset tips ranging from beaches, picnic spots, folklore and transport to what to do if you have only a day to spare, or how to entertain the children in the rain. Good as that is, the most remarkable feature of this book has to be the information on eating and sleeping to be found at the end of each chapter. Beautiful cameo descriptions of hotels and restaurants offer details that can only have been achieved with a huge amount of personal research. I have not seen the like of this in any other guide book and I can't wait to put it to the test when we visit!

Not up to much 28 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
This arrived yesterday and already I'm ordering the Rough Guide to take to Brittany next week instead. It is an odd beast. It is a fine production.Good quality paper, good pictures but its content is rather scant. It focuses on only the major towns and omits much of the smaller villages and towns of interest. Those it does cover, the book only dedicates a few lines to. The structure is poor. It divides Brittany into three areas, but provides no map of those areas so you have no idea where to place a location it is referring to. It might have bee helpful if a map had been placed in the dust covers, but those are fiiled with adverts for other books. It really is a poor excuse for a guide book. We are 'well travelled' but this is the first time we have used this range of books and we won't make the same mistake twice.

Superficially this looks good as it is printed on good quality paper with some nice photographs. It is the kind of book you can leave lying around to impress friends.

POSITIVES:
* The Introductory section has a useful run down on history, culture, activities, shopping.
* There are some nice photographs.
* A few towns are covered in detail, some have a map.

* The section on sleeping, eating and shopping at the end of each region are good with plenty of ideas and sufficient detail to help make a choice.

NEGATIVES
* There is only one small map of Brittany. Many places mentioned in the text are not marked on the map.
* There are no detailed regional maps
* Most places are covered in a few lines. Even descriptions of important sites like Carnac are very superficial with no map or information to help find the sites mentioned. Garvenais is dismissed as "a Neolithic cairn with extraordinary carvings".
* Opening times and entrance fees are not always given.
* Information to find tourist attractions is not given or is so vague as to be useless. "...follow roads round a triangle to find them.' May be it is obvious when you are on the spot?

*The two page spread on walking was spoilt because it was printed on a sepia and brown background picture which made reading the print difficult to impossible. The double page spread on sports and activities is printed on a pale grey/green/blue picture of coastline and equally as difficult to read.

I've used Footprint books for India, Patagonia and Bolivia and although maps have been poor, I have been impressed by the amount of detail and information in them. They are solidly written fact.

I was very disappointed by this guide book.

Only buy if you want information on sleeping, eating and shopping. If you want detailed information about towns, villages and sights in Brittany, don't buy this book, try either Eyewitness Brittany or Michelin Brittany.
