A very readable and broad-ranging overview of many aspects of women's lives and experiences over a period of 200 years. Tha author introduces each document or extract with background material and there are excellent notes and references for further reading. The book includes the voices and experiences of women and girls of all classes and I feel it would be a useful and very accessible volume for anyone studying history of this period.
"I have been nearly nine years in the pit.....We drink water that runs through the pit. I am not paid wages myself; the man who employs me pays my father; but I don't know how much it is. I have never been to school. I had to begin working when I ought to have been at school."
