Book Description

3 Oct 2013
This full colour compendium will illustrate the fleet of non-fitted and vacuum-braked freight wagons built by British Railways, for both revenue-earning traffic and departmental use, during the period from Nationalisation in 1948 right through until the construction and conversion of such wagons ceased during the 1990s. The book will provide an outline of the evolution of the BR wagon fleet, covering initial orders to pre-nationalisation designs, the development of BR 'standard' designs, and the effects of the 1955 Modernisation Plan. Technical developments such as brake gear design, roller bearing axleboxes and hydraulic/pneumatic buffers are covered together the variety of liveries carried over the years. Much of the information will be provided via extended captions which will accompany over 200 colour photographs with the author highlighting significant technical details of wagon design and information relating to traffic/departmental use plus the geographical sphere of operation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unfitted wagons in colour. 12 April 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is an interesting book for students of early BR as well as railway modellers.
The colour pictures assist when trying to paint and weather wagons.
It complements the other books I have, most of which are black & white.

Wonderfully detailed book on this reletively obscure subject. It's so good that such books exist and so it would be churlish to offer any criticism.
