I bought this book as a record (I have other "combined volume" reprints as well as some originals). It is exactly what it purports to be and I am very happy with the purchase. It is a pity that Ian Allan do not also now (they used to!!), publish companion volume locoshed books.

These re-published guides are a real trip back to childhood days when Ian Allen handbooks were at the side of all train spotters. Lots of detail about classes, numerical lists and wonderful old B/W photos of long lost engines !!
Real trip down memory lane: never loses relevance.
Same applies to ABC's for other years like 1961 and 1956-7 that I bought as a trio

This book takes me back to my own early trainspotting days. Technically very accurate of course and a great reference book for me as a railway modeller. The glory days of steam, with the exciting names of engines galore are all here to see and read. Great little book.

This combined volume is very much to the formula, numbered lists of BR locomotive stock, and photographs (unfortunately the reprographic reproduction onto matt paper doesn't give particularly good results for the B&W photos). Excellent for nostalgia and the railway modeller, though at this stage it was very much steady as she goes, with the standard locos still some way off, and the inherited stock still serving more or less intact (though pretty much clapped out).

Gives more substantial information than the original transpotters guides. This is an excellent reference book and good size to keep handy .

Although a little before (just) my train spotting days it vividly brought back memories of those days. Thank you Ian Allan.

This reprint of the BR Locomotives Combined volume is up to the standard of previous Ian Allan issues. However, my only criticism (hence the 4-star rating) is that they did not include a section on the locomotive shed allocations at the time (I seem to remember that this was a separate booklet to the other four regional listings)...a pity!

I really only wanted LNER but had to buy the whole book to get it. Never mind, not too expensive so worth it for me.
I'm sure that they would have sold far more if they had re-printed the originals though!
