A missing link. 28 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
There are not many books around that concentrate on coaching stock and so this one is very welcome. I would like to have seen more information on non-corridor coaching stock and less attention paid to Irish railway items as I think that this was given too much coverage. This book is still worth having though.

Pretty good! 25 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
As with all of Robert Hendry's books, it presents a good variety of the subject covered with the usual smattering of the slightly unusual as well as the things you'd expect to see. Marred only by poor quality photographs (sometimes-and this may be the publisher, not the photographer), plus Robert Hendry's insistence on covering Ireland which although no doubt interesting and the Isle of Wight (which has always been rather odd), are seperate networks from the British Isles and I feel should be covered on their own. However, overall I would say that this book represents excellent value and covers pretty well the subject of its title. 8/10.

At first I was a little disappointed because it did not appear to be as good as its freight stock equivalent. However, on reading further I changed my opinion. It is a useful and interesting book using colour photography in the 1950's, 60's and 70's. As a result it is a useful reference book for those who are just interested as well as enthusiasts and modellors.

The colour photography is good because it shows coaching stock how it really ran rather than the pristine conditions found in most models. As a result, it is a helpful reference book on how to weather coaching stock.

It is unusual to be provided with pictures of Irish railways despite the major contributions made by engineers such as Richard Maunsell. The importance of Ireland in the development of deisel rail cars is shown and its impact on mainland Britain.

I will certainly be dragging it out on a regular basis when painting and "aging" stock
