For anyone who is relatively new to moths (and like me has thus far concentrated on the 'macros') this book makes an excellent first purchase when venturing into the world of the 'micros'. The text is clear and well laid out and the photographs give excellent quality images of the whole group. I feel that compared to 'Skinner' (which handles the 'macros' excellently) it is not as good in terms of value for money (Goater describes 208 species and Skinner approximately 850) but this is really the only work of it's kind. The value for money aspect is the only reason in my opinion that the book receives 4 and not 5 stars.

For those wishing to become more involved, there is adequate reference to identification from genitalia examination where appropriate and the confusing issue of what is and what is not a 'micro' is also addressed.

Overall an excellent book and well worth buying.

This is a key book for anyone with a serious interest in moths and particularly the 'Micros'.The photos are excellent and there are good drawings of the genitalia where needed for identification. Will be on the bookshelves for years to come until some one manages to produce something better. No wonder secondhand copies hold their value!

British Pyralid Moths 22 Jun 2011
By M. E. W
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this in the hope that it would help with ID of some of the smaller moths but it is hugely disappointing. The front cover gives the impression that the photos/plates would show the moths in their natural resting position - they don't! The plates are all of 'pinned' moths (eg dead specimens with wings laid flat) and hence not much use to identifying moths in the field, and as I'm not into killing moths and pinning them to a board this book is not much use. There IS one lot of photos inside which happens to be exactly the same as the front cover (what was the point???). The expense of this book is not justified at all. It's about the same size as Bird-dropping Tortrix Moths of the British Isles: A Field Guide to the Bird-dropping Mimics which is far superior, half the price and whilst may refer to a different range of moths is a much better book.
